Babies on the Brain

Do not call me mama.

I just ordered a diaper (it's a sickness- but this one was actually for a friend not my phantom phetus) and the vendor emailed me back with the typical "Thanks mama!".

For some reason it's like nails on the chalkboard for me.  Every time I hear it I cringe.

How on earth did this become the standard greeting?

Fuuck TTC - I'm moving on.

"It's a child, not a cheeto" Thanks mmariluh!
"Ew. I've read all of two posts from you, and you stink like rotting garbage."

Re: Do not call me mama.

  • I don't get it either.  I usually respond with, "I'm not your mama."

Unless of course it's coming from Henry.

  • I hate it.  I went out to lunch yesterday with some coworkers- all men, and when the waitress brought out the food she handed me my salad and said, "Here you go, mama!"  I gave her the confused puppy look but didn't say anything.

I would tell you not to call me mama.  I think it is weird

  • I have a weird thing with affectionate pet names from strangers in general.  Unless someone is considerably older than me (think obviously senior citizen) I don't want to be called anything other than my name, hey you, or if I'm someone's customer I guess, ma'am.  No sweetie, honey, darling, etc...

  • Ew, my nurse Friday night kept calling me Mommy. I wanted to smack her. A lot of the NICU nurses call us Mom and Dad, but they're not TLF's nurses so have no reason to know our names, so I don't care. But if you're my nurse and I know you know my name? Yuck.

  • I often have people call me mama or mommy when I am out with Nephew.  I know it's bad, but I rarely correct them.  I guess this could be a FFFC, but I like the fact that they think I could be his mom. Embarrassed

I do it too with friends of mine that I know are moms. Growing up, my mom also called me mama as a Nickname. Me and my brother were also both "Bubbys" which is short for papito, which is slang for little one/boy.

  • If someone called me mama, I'd immediately think it would be very presumptuous for them to assume I was pregnant. Then I'd start wondering if I looked like I had gained weight.

I realize this line of reasoning is moot since I am pregnant, but still. Not cool.

  • Several of my coworkers call me mama now that I'm pregnant. They are all older and have kids and its always a "how is Mama doing today? Baby moving?" or "how's our little mama?"

At first I thought it was wierd but it was meant out of kindness and concern so I let it roll.

I've never called anyone that though. However, I will admit that in true Southern fashion, when I was a waitress in a bar in college I called everyone "Honey and Sugar" with an increased Southern Drawl. Stereotype? yes but I don't mind batting my eyes and using sugared words on dirty old men for better tips :) 300 bucks a night for serving beer and pool balls?? you bet your arse I'll call you HUN-EEE

I am bad at this. I call parents of kids Mom & Dad all the time. I try to ask their names, but there's so much turnover that I can't possibly remember them all. I realize that not everyone likes it, but it just happens. I sorry.
