PNVs?

Should I already be taking prenatal vitamins?  I'm not currently expecting and we're not actively TTC, but we're not preventing either.  We're basically just going to let nature take its course and go from there.  So should I already be taking PNVs or is just a multi-vitamin ok?  What do you guys think?

Re: PNVs?

  • Yes, I started taking PNV's a couple of months before even TTC.  I take the Target brand prenatal.

(The extra folic acid is great...and very important in the earliest of pregnancy for spinal development.)

  • Do they make you sick?  I've heard that different kinds can make you queasy.  Also, they aren't giant horse pills are they?  I suck at taking pills and have horrible gag reflexes.

    This exactly!

  • I started taking the target brand vitamins this week, and they have not made me sick. They are also pretty easy to take. They aren't any bigger than regular vitamins.
  • Our baby was a surprise, but I would have loved to have had the opportunity to take them before hand that my baby gets all the benefits from day one, as opposed to week 6 when I found out.   Plus, it will give you time to find one that agrees well with. My dr prescribed Prenatal Plus and I have never had a problem with it (plus it is part of Walmarts $4 prescription deal, so it is cheaper than a lot of the OTC vitamins), but I  know some ladies who have had a hard time finding one that doesn't make them feel sick.
  • OTC are just as good as prescription, right?

My OB said the Target brand were fine and to continue with those instead of giving me a script.

I take my pill every night when I go to bed (when I brush my teeth) and they don't make me sick.  They are not really big either...about the same size as one Tylenol.

  • I agree about Target brand! I was taking those at first, but switched to a prescription because my iron was low pre-pregnancy. If you have not conceived before your annual check-up, it doesn't hurt to ask your doctor. I wouldn't have known about the low iron until much later in pregnancy if I hadn't!

Thats good to know. I took these as well and never had a problem. I took them at night right before bed. Make sure you take one that has omega 3 in it.

  • I took Prenatal One A Day's, and they made me sick as a dog. I'm on Prenexa now, which doesn't tear up my stomach as long as I take them before bed.

My doctor told me that ultimately, it's important to find a PNV with DHA and I want to say 1000mg of Folic Acid but that seems a lot so don't hold me to it :P He also told me that if you can find one with B12 in it, supposedly it helps with morning sickness.
