Trouble TTC

Tell me about your HSG

I'm more of a lurker here, but seeing as today is CD1 I will be calling to schedule my HSG.  Is it awful?  Is it something I could go to work after having?  (I'm a teacher).

Re: Tell me about your HSG

  • The anticipation was the worst part for me.

I took 4 advil an hour ahead of time.  My tubes were open so maybe that's part of it, but it was literally painless for me.  It wasn't even uncomfortable.  However I'm still glad that I didn't have to work that day...just the stress from it had me exhausted.  (I'm a teacher too.)

Some people do go in to work after, but some people don't have such a great experience with it.  There's really no way to tell.

    Good luck!

  • For me it was not horrible.  There was slight cramping, but it went away after a few hours.  I thought it was pretty cool since they let me watch it on the screen and explained everthing to me.  I totally went right back to work for another 5 hrs and was fine.  The only part that was hard for me was the DR doing it was super hott and it was just really weird having him look at my wooha and all.
  • I plan on taking the day off for mine. My RE said the way she does it will be less painful but feel like cramps. My sister was in tears on the table but because a resident did it. My RE said if done properly you should not be in tears. I have to take 4 advil prior. I also plan to take 2 Xanax! GL with yours.

  • I actually had 2.  My first one was horrible.  It was very painful for me, but I had a blocked tube.  Also my OB did it which is not something they do as regularly as the RE.  I had it done in the summer and I said I was glad I had off (I'm a teacher too) because I would not have been able to go back to work.  When I started seeing my RE they did a repeat and my experience was not nearly as bad.  I still had cramping during it probably because of my blocked tube.  It is a super fast procedure!  My appt. was around 2 and I was able to go back to work that evening for night conferences.  Definitely take some pain meds an hour or so beforehand.  Good luck!

  • It was very painful for me. Very uncomfortable! My right side spasmed shut due to the cramping. I think most people have no problems, I was just the exception to the rule.

  • My was super simple - very mild cramps.  I took the entire day off work - but I didn't need to.  I could have went back - but mine was on a friday - so I ended up with a long weekend.  :)

  • As a fellow teacher YES!! you should take the whole day off, I had mine in the summer but would have taken the day if it was during the school year.  I had a lot of cramping for several days after and during was quite painful for me as they had a hard time getting the catheter in.  Good Luck!!

  • I thought it was worse than I expected. I was crampy and bloated. I went to work after it, but ended up leaving early.

For the actual procedure I thought it hurt more than I expected, I wish I had taken 4 advil instead of 2.

  • Mine was very not good.  There was a radiologist directing what I guess was an intern or resident for mine. First they had a hard time getting the tube thingy (catheter, maybe?) into the right place because of the position of my cervix.  When they were finally able to inject the dye I had sharp, shooting pain for a minute or 2, and then bad cramping for the rest of the procedure. And, my tubes were wide open, plus I had taken prescription pain meds an hour earlier.  When it was over I was dizzy and I had pretty bad cramps the rest of the day, so I was glad I had that day off work. Oh, and I also had period-like bleeding for 2 days afterward. From what I understand this is not common.

Please don't let this scare you though - in talking to friends who've had this done and reading posts on here, most people have a much better experience than I had. I suspect it was the radiologist/intern not totally knowing what they were doing.

  • Mine was not really too painful.  They had a lot of trouble getting the catheter in and then once it was in it fell out multiple times, so that was the most uncomfortable part and was making me kind of anxious that it was so difficult for them to get in.  I did not even notice the dye going in but my tubes were open.  Afterwards though, I think I got up to fast because when trying to change back into clothes I blacked out for a minute, which i think was more nerves and anxiety.  I work at a school and took the day off and was glad I did.
  • I had an HSG yesterday. I took 800mg of advil 1 hr beforehand. I had some cramping  but nothing awful. My tubes were open so I don't know if that makes it less painful. I bled a little yesterday but nothing today. My test was at 8:30am and I went to work right after. I felt fine all day.

  • I had my HSG yesterday as well and it was a little worse than I expected. I took 800mg of Advil before, and I'd hate to know what it feels like without any pain medication.

While it didn't last long, it was pretty uncomfortable and painful for me. There were tears, I can't lie. After, I felt pretty good with just a little cramping and bleeding. I doubt I would have wanted to go to work and am glad I just got to go home. I'm sure my experience isn't the norm, i hope yours goest well!

  • I just had mine on Monday.  I didn't take any Motrin before, but did have some cramping after.  The test was painless and cramping started about 10 minutes after.  I did bleed a bit after as well.  I felt fine after I got home and took some Motrin.  Good Luck!

  • Of all the tests so far, the HSG is the one I would take the day off for.  Mine was pretty bad.

  • I just had mine today.  It was very painful.  The radiology tech said judging by my face, mine was one of the more painful ones.  But my left tube was also blocked and that's the side I had all the painful cramping in.

After my doctor took the equipment out of me the cramping stopped and I felt fine the rest of the day.  I could have easily gone back to work.  No trouble

  • I had an SHG back in March, and took the day off for it. I'm glad I did because it was extremely painful for me. I know it's not exactly the same as the HSG, but similar enough that I'm a lot worried about how my HSG is going to go on Wednesday, so I took the whole day off again just to be safe.

My doctor told me to take 800mg Advil/Motrin at 11am (for the 12pm test) and I'm also required to take 7 days of antibiotic.

  • I had my OB do it. I took 4 advil about an hour before hand. My tubes were open, but it was pretty intense, but I have a low pain tolerance. It was totally do-able though...it kind of felt like one big long cramp that didn't let up, but it was over pretty quickly!

  • I didn't take any meds before hand but I would if I were to do it again. The worst part is over before you know it. I was crampy for the rest of the day and spotted for about 2 days. I could have driven myself home but dh came so I didn't have to.

I did experience a strange ringing in my ears during which my dr said was a possible side effect of the dye.

    Good luck!
