Success after IF

Looking for IVF success stories w/ egg quality issues...

::Popping over from IF::

My ET for fresh IVF#3 was yesterday. I had 22 eggies retrieved, 16 fertilized, and by day 5, only 4 had survived. When I asked the embryologist why, I was told it's possible I have egg quality issues.

The good news is I was able to transfer 2 "beautiful" blasts yesterday, but I can't get the thought of poor egg quality out of my mind. I guess I can't help but think, are these embies inside me strong enough to succeed?

Can you wonderful ladies provide any IVF success stories with eqq quality issues?

I really appreciate it!

Re: Looking for IVF success stories w/ egg quality issues...

  • those are about the same numbers *I* had with my last fresh cycle, (ret 19, 11 mat with ICSI, 4 perfect, 2 xfer, 2 frozen on day 6) and they were tickled pink with those numbers. Of course, I'm 37.

To have 4 great blasts at day 5 is awesome. You lost a lot, but they were duds ;-) Keep in mind that when you hear of gals freezing 10 on day three and such, sometimes the clinic is not as picky with what they freeze, and something they believe that it's just best to get them into mom, or freeze them and then grow them out more later... different criteria, so you might be comparing apples to zebras here.

I would call it "egg quality" issues just yet, esp based on a passing comment the embryologist made.

Curiosity only: how old are you, protocol, stim med brand, dose ???

    best of luck to you!!!

  • Mine isn't an IVF success but I will give you my story anyway!  I did IVF twice and of the 26 eggs retrieved we only ended up with 2 poor, fragmented, bottom of the barrel embryos on days 5 and 6.  I ended up getting pregnant with Jax on my own-I think we just finally hit a good egg.

The fact that you had 2 beautiful blasts and 2 others is fantastic in my book!   You just never know at this point what happened to the others.  Maybe your protocol wasn't right for you or there was some sort of lab issue.  I wouldn't be convinced yet that you have an egg quality issue.  What happened during your other IVFs?

  • I can't share a story because I only had 3 retrieved to start with but...

If the 2 that were "beautiful blasts" were poor quality they would have been able to see it with fragmentation and slow growth.

Nature is intended to only grow 1 to perfection.  IVF jacks with that.

Maybe try to look at it as your body perfecting the best and letting go of the rest?

I can tell you from first hand experience with only 3 retrieved that you're after that one golden egg.  You've got every reason to believe that it's inside you right now turning into your first child.

I know how hard it is but try to focus all of your energy on the positive.  Take a day or 2 to grieve the others that didn't grow well and then focus all the love and energy you've got on the 2 that are growing strong and looking to stick in the next couple of days.

Tonz of sticky dust headed your way!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • I am a poor responder with quality issues. I had to tweak the protocol a few times to find what worked. My first IVF I under responded with 5 eggs on a long lupron protocol. My next IVF was with a antagonist and I had lots of eggs, put they all crapped out except the 2 so-so quality eggs we transferred.

My 3rd protocol was my success with a estrogen priming antagonist cycle. I had the best quality eggs on that, with a "high implant potential" egg, that is what my clinic deems the best of the best.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • Thank you all so much!!

To answer your questions. I'm only 27 which is why I think they were surprised to see so many go kaput. I have been on long lupron with each cycle, but this is my first cycle with a new clinic who- in my opinion- is 1,000 times more concerned, observent, and interested in my case.

This cycle definitely provided the most eggs out of the three. With my last fresh attempt, I also transferred blasts; however, I was at the old clinic and can't really trust how "great" they looked.

Thank you all so much again! Hearing your stories and listening to your advice is exactly what I need right now!

    Huge hugs!!

  • Well, I never had any survive past 3 days, and had similar retrieval and fert values.  I even had one transfer canceled at d3 since all the embies arrested.  After 4 IVFs, we went with donor eggs and never looked back.

And a year after our son was born...boom - pregnant on my own.  SHOCK of a lifetime.  It sounds trite that all it takes is one good egg - but it's true.  And 2 beautiful blasts... wow, I would have killed for blasts!!  I think you are in great, great shape.  Seriously - I bet you get KU this cycle!

Egg quality is an unknown quality - no one can quantify it or really describe it.  It's more operational than anything.  If you have two eggs that can make beautiful blasts, I think you are all set.

    BEST of luck!

  • I have old and crappy eggs. it took 4 attempts at IVF (plus diet and lifestyle changes) to finally get the elusive bfp.

mdl/epp with co-culture was the wining protocol. my bfp 'secret recipe' is on my blog.

I think you have an AWESOME chance with 2 blasts. good luck!  :)

  • For my IVF cycle, they retrieved 15 eggs. Of those, 12 were mature. Using ICSI, only 12 fertilized. They put the best two back and none survived to freeze. As you can see by my picture, we have one healthy little boy. It can happen!

  • I produce old eggs. But after 3 IVF cycles, 45 eggs retrived, I am 19 weeks pregnant with 1 of my 8 cell A grade embryos.

    Good luck.

My last go around I added bee pollen/royal jelly, Cq10, wheatgrass and acupuncture to the mix for 2 months before the retrieval.
