Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Vacations with LO

DH and I are in the beginning stages of planning our first family vacation with Lily. We are planning on going to the beach in August. She will be 22 months old then. It is about a 12 hour drive no counting many stops with a toddler. We cannot decide when to drive. Flying is not an option. Option #1 is leave in the morning and drive, stop at a hotel overnight, and then get up in the morning and drive the rest of the way. Option #2 would be to leave around 6:00PM and hope she sleeps. We could drive as far as we could and then stop overnight, get up and drive in the morning. I am open to all suggestions/opinions on this. FWIW, she is a great sleeper and usually sleeps from 7PM-8:30AM and takes an afternoon nap from 2-3:45ish. TIA!

I would leave in the morning and stop half way and then finish the next day.  Bring lots of different things to do in the car.  We have a DVD player that attaches to the seat and DS LOVES it!  For a long car trip its a must!

  • I would leave in the morning.  The couple of times we have tried to leave at night and hoped that DS would sleep in the car didnt' work at all.  He slept great in the car, but when we got to the hotel he woke up.  He was wide awake because it was like he had just had a nap.  It was hours before he fell back to sleep.

We recently did a 7 hour trip and left around 10 am.  DS was occupied for a couple hours in the car, then we stopped for lunch and he took a 3 hour nap in the car.  We stopped again after his nap and had a snack and he played in the play place (I think we stopped at McDonald's).  It gave him some activity and then he did pretty well the rest of the way.  Good luck.  Bring lots of toys and if you have a DVD player, that really helped us.

  • Drive overnight! You guys will be tired, but she will sleep, be easier to deal with, and you will get there faster than having to make 100 stops during the day.Or, stretch her to a later afternoon nap, then leave at naptime. Stop for dinner and a run around to burn off energy and then you just have to deal with the hours between then and bedtime... DVD player?. You will get to your destination earlier though, like middle of the night though.
