Moms w/ LOs in DC how much time?

would you want that your DC situation was going to change?

Currently, I watch 2 boys in our home 2 days a week.  Next year DD is going to go to school either 2 or 3 days a week.  If 2 days a week then it would be the days I watch the boys and I don't have a vehicle that holds 4 carseats...  if 3 days a week, then I would not have any "free" day that I wouldn't either have kids or be toting kids. Also frankly,  4 fully mobile children will be too much for me and I know that's what's coming.

Obviously I can watch the children for the rest of this school year and through the summer (when their schedule becomes more irregular and I know not many DCPs don't penalize/charge people for lightening the schedule over the summer- basically I only get paid when I work.)  I know how difficult it can be to find part time care, but I also don't want to be out of a job before I have to-

  • Honestly, I would want maybe a month?  But that would be ideal and understandably you don't want to tell them now and then have them go out and find something now.  Just from what I've heard it's easier to find PT care when kids are older.  For example our center does not do PT infant care, but once kids move to the 2's room and up they do offer it.

  • I am a planner, so I would love as much notice as possible.  I agree though, that you run the risk of them finding somewhere new and making the switch ahead of time.  Tough call...

  • The mom has been grilling me about what our plans for DD's school is next year-  and I have been dragging my feet about it, because I know when I tell her the school plans I am going to have to tell her my long term plan as well.

  • Hm, that is a tough one. I would want as much notice as possible, but I would keep using you until you couldn't watch my kids anymore. Obviously they are happy with you watching their kids and its mutually beneficial.

I don't know what to suggest you do, unfortunately. It's a tough call.

  • Probably 2 or 3 months. She will need to check other places out and they may not have availability, etc.

  • I am probably going to have to give her the head's up today.  I am working in DD's classroom and she is watching DS (all of the moms w/ younger sibs are taking turns swapping like this.)  So I think it will probably come up when I pick him up.

I think she will understand.  She was asking me about DS's naps and basically they are a wreck partially due to having the extra kids here 2x a week.
