Babies: 3 - 6 Months

BFing and gaining weight

I gained 9 lbs during pregnancy which I lost pretty much the same week I gave birth.

Fast forward 5 months into BFing and I am at the same weight I was when I was 9 months pregnant....WTF?? I know that I am eating a lot more to sustain not only me but DD, however I cannot seem to be able to control how much is too much as far as eating.

I am also trying to keep up on a daily gym routine but with school full time I tend to skip some evenings.

What are you doing to keep lean while BFing. Are there any good diets to follow? I have not introduced solids yet so all DD gets is BM.

TIA ladies

Re: BFing and gaining weight

  • Weight watchers has helped immensely for me. I've lost about 12 lbs in 2 months since I started.

  • Have you taken the weight of your breasts into consideration? I feel like my breasts are much heavier than before.

I'm 10lbs less than I was pp, but I didn't get there until I cut out dairy. When I did the weight fell off.

Also, could you be about to start your period? I just had mine despite exclusively BFing and I did bloat up and gain a few lbs because of it. Fluctuating 5lbs or so is normal.

  • I've been doing Zumba (right here at home) and spinning, too.

Also, for snacks, I eat a lot of them! And I mean a lot, but I do things like almonds mixed with dried cranberries, organic fruit rollups, fresh tomatoes and fresh mozzarella and olive oil with mint leaves, avocado and hummus. I shovel it all in, but I just figure the healthier the snacks, the easier it will be for me and for her. (I still eat junky stuff from time to time though!)

Man, if I could do this I would be golden!

Sometimes it's okay to follow. (Picture is a clicky)

  • I wish I could help but I am also in the same boat. I gained 16 pounds with my pregnancy lost all of that and then an additional 15 pounds and then went back up 8 pounds. I am trying to eat as healthy as I can and be as active as I can but its not helping. Unlike the pp I did try weight watchers for about a month I lost weight but my milk supply then started to deminish so I quickly stopped that. I would love to see if anyone else has some suggestions because I too would like to lose some more weight as I was overweight to begin with.

LO having allergies has helped me a lot, lol.  I can't eat Asian take-out, pizza, nachos, butter, ice cream, cheez-its... *drool*

I'm pretty sure I'd just die if I were you.

I'm going to start assuming each breast weighs 10 lbs.  That puts me right about where I should be!

Honestly though - I'm right there too - I cannot lose weight.  I know some women hold onto it until they wean - it's just  natural protection in case hard times hit.  For me it doesn't seem to matter how much/little/what I eat - I'm staying the exact same weight, but if I cut back too much, I can tell if affects my supply.  So, since nothing is helping or hurting, I'm going to enjoy the next few months and try again when DS starts nursing less and I don't need to be as concerned about my supply.  Cookies, here I come!

  • Same exact thing here! I gained 12 pounds while pregnant, lost that plus a few by 2 weeks post baby and now I'm up 8 pounds. So stressful and I feel like everyone must think I'm a lazy cow. I don't eat dairy because of DD's allergy and I don't eat junk so it's beyond me what the problem is...It makes me want to cry and punch a wall all at once. Ugh.

  • Same boat here. I gained about 33, lost 30, but now I'm up 5 again. So about 8 lbs from prepregnancy weight.

I mean, in the grand scheme of things it's not that bad, but it's just annoying to lose it and then gain it back. However, I'm BF'ing too and I have a voracious hunger at times. I just roll with it and try to make good food choices.

  • I gained about 28 during pregnancy and lost all but 10 of it by 3 months post-pregnancy. Then, I went back to work, and the last 10 came off. I still exclusively breastfeed and pump while at work. I found that in my case, I was eating a bunch of crap while sitting around at home with him. When I went back to work and could move around a lot without having to worry about him, and ate a bit better, and it all fell off. I thought for sure, prior to going back to work, that I would be one of those women who held onto the last 10 pounds until weaning. He's almost 6 months now, and I've even lost a couple more pounds. My appetite has fluctuated, but is much more than before pregnancy. I haven't been holding back with eating due to concerns re: my supply, but I have tried to eat a bit more healthy. So in sum, keeping busy with non-baby related things has helped me a lot. I haven't made it back to the gym yet, but I'm hoping to do so in the next month. I used to run a crazy amount per week until I got pregnant. I'd like to get back to it. My perspective is that if you're within 10 pounds of your pre-pregnancy weight and doing your best with healthy choices, I wouldn't worry about it. It is annoying, but once you wean, you can focus on it again as a higher priority.
