WW out to dinner ?

Hey WW ladies, I haven't dined out since I started, and I am kind of freaking out. I mean I want to enjoy dinner but I don't want to blow all my points for the week.  We are going to La Palmera Mexican and I was thinking the Chicken Fajitas with corn tortillas seemed like the best beat.  But how do I log it?  The place doesn't have nutritional information on their site, do I just use the fajita search on the tracker?  I looked up something similar like Chevy's and it says 1 serving, and it's like 24 pts, but I am assume that is if you eat the entire dish since the fat content and carb were in the 40's.

Any advice would be very appreciated.

  • They probably have a fajita option on the tracker. Have you checked? What you want to be careful of is the oil. They use oil to cook the fajita meat and veggies. Also, avoid the sour cream and cheese. They are the full fat variety, and not worth the points. Study up on eyeballing portions, there is an article in your "my plan" section. Ask for a go box to come with your meal, and automatically put half of your meal in the box. Also, stay away from margaritas. They are delicious, but a diet killer. You also want to stay out of the chip basket! GL!!

  • There is a Fajita option in the tracker and says servings is 2.  But I was just worried it wouldn't be as many points as I would actually be eating at the place since I know they use oil to cook the food.  Do I just ask them to NOT prepare it in the oil, that just seems so over the top to me.  I don't want to have to change everything when I go out to eat ya know?  I'm already changing it from what I'd normally get.  I've actually never even had Fajita's before (Shocker).  I knew to stay away from the chips, and sourcream.  I guess I was just hoping it would be easier. That's probably why we haven't gone out to dinner in a month! Yikes.

  • If you go to the WW website click on Food & Recipes.  Then click on Eating out.  You will then see "Cuisine of the Day" scroll to "see all" and then pick Mexican.  They have some good advice and point values there.

  • It's probably their version of fajitas. I went to Wiki Weight Watcher and typed in the name of a typical Mexican restaurant. They have Chicken Fajitas at 7, which sounds way more accurate than 2. Here is that site: Wiki Weight Watcher

ETA: I calculated it manually, on my points calculator, and Fajitas are 5. But that is only for half the portion they give you at restaurants.

    Here are two helpful articles:

Yes, I would ask them for either no oil or light oil.  You are paying for the meal and they should *want* to prepare it the way you would like ( within reason).

I ask all the time when we go out to Mexican.  I am what my husband calls high maintence when we go out, but I know what I like and not afraid to ask for it.

Thanks I did see that Wiki site before, oh and the Tracker says it's 10 points I am sorry, the serving SIZE was 2 Fajitas.  LOL Sorry about that.  I didn't plan on eating all of it, I went in thinking only half...so yours says HALF is only 5 points?  That's nuts, does that include the tortillas?

Thanks for the advice, I did also check the eating out section (that's where I got the 10 from).  My DH has decided he is sick, might have the flu so I just canceled our plans.  Bummer.  But now I have awesome advice for when we actually do go out!

  • Even though you aren't going out I just wanted to add that you can always bring your own condiments. If I know where we are going before we leave I will portion out my own low fat mayo, sour cream, cheese, etc...based on where we are going.

ETA: How have I never heard of wiki weight watchers....and why don't they have an android app!? Crying

  • When you order, also ask them to do minimal or no oil... even fajitas that seem like they are really healthy, are usually loaded with oil at restaurants.

ok duh, now I read the others and they already talked about that.   Don't feel bad asking for what you want.  It's ok.

I can't imagine 2 fajitas at a restaurant could be 5 points though.  Oh, but I dont' know the new points, I only know the old ones.

It's 5 pts for 1 fajita. Not two. And usually, you can make four with the amount of food you are given.

ah that makes sense.... and yeah, you get a LOT of food with fajitas!

  • And, if you can do the fajita meat & veggies without the tortillas - ask for lettuce, put salsa on top, and make a 'salad'? - you'll save a lot of points!  Tortillas at restaurants are usually made with lard (but taste so good.... Sad)

  • Try looking at www.dwlz.com. Its kind of a random website but look for the restaurant tab then search by name. She don't have every restaurant on there but there is quite a few so if I couldn't find the place I was going I would try to find something similar. I hope it helps, for me it is at least a good starting point!
