Trouble TTC

PCOS Concerns

Hello all!

I haven't posted on this board before but figured you guys would have the answers. A little background: I got married this past summer to my high school sweetheart. We are both finishing college and we are not planning on starting a family for at least another two years. I have had problems all of my life with extremely irregular periods and horrible cramping. Before going to college the doctor talked to me about PCOS and that she thinks that that may explain my irregular periods. She put me on birth control to help and it did for a little while. Fast forward three years...I am still taking the birth control but it's no longer helping me regulate my periods (I haven't had one in months, but I am not pregnant) I have heard that PCOS makes it difficult to get pregnant but don't know much more.

From personal experiences does it make it harder? For some people, are they able to get prengant right away? Are there things I should be doing now or should be worried about? I can't wait to start a family and I seem to have constant worries about our future and the ability for us to get pregnant.

Thank you for any advice, help, stories you guys have!!

Re: PCOS Concerns

  • You should probably have some testing done to make sure PCOS is the problem.  Irregular periods can also be caused by other things (like thyroid issues).

Some women with PCOS still ovulate regularly & have no problems getting pregnant.  Some do not.  The only way to know if you're ovulating is to chart your BBT, but I don't know if charting works while you're on the pill.

I have PCOS & was not ovulating on my own.  The only times I ovulated were with medication.  I did become pregnant twice, but had 2 early m/c.  I lost 40-lbs & am now ovulating on my own.  I am having testing done to see if we can determine the reason for the losses, but I will be TTC without meds again in the near future.

  • I can totally understand where you are coming from. I had the same concerns before we were ready to start TTC. I knew we would probably need some help, but I didn't know to what extent. I have PCOS which I've known for many years. I also discovered last year that I have hypothyroid. I thought I could take a magic little pill called Clomid, and everything would be on its way. WRONG! Clomid didn't work for me, it did nothing. I tried two cycles of injections, which also didn't work for me. We've been TTC for about 3 years now. I'm planning to try two more cycles of injections, and if that doesn't work, then I will have to move on to IVF, which is about $13,000 out of pocket.

PCOS affects each person differently. Also, each person with PCOS, responds differently to treatments. You may get pregnant right away with the help of Clomid...or you might not. I would recommend trying to get your body in the best of health possible in the meantime. Eat healthy and exercise regularly. Read Taking Charge of your Fertility, and I also liked The Fertility Diet. Good luck, and feel free to ask your questions.

  • In my personal experience, BCP makes PCOS worse.  IMO, get off the pills now, because your body could take a year or more to regulate, especially with PCOS.  Read Taking Charge of Your Fertility, but also "The Infertility Cure" for notes on eating for hormonal imbalance.  And, as the others said, get the proper tests (though remember they aren't foolproof).  Better to take care of it now and get as healthy as possible before you're counting the days of each month and each cycle.  GL to you.
