NBR: Tired of cooking all the time!!

I have traveled 3 weeks a month for the past 15 years, but recently switched positions to be able to spend more time at home (quite timely!). I am LOVING being home and working from home, but WOW it is a lot of work to cook 3 meals a day! I am so used to room service and eating out. just planning meals for a week takes forever! Those of you who stay home and cook your meals - how in the world do you do this all the time? My hat is off to you.... now share your suggestions and recipes!!!

  • I make a meal plan for about 5 meals, then make a grocery list from that.  I keep a running list of meals that we like so I always have plenty of ideas.  Here are my two favorite cooking blogs:

  • Do you have a Crock Pot? So many things you can make and it's all fairly easy.

  • It is extremely hard and latelly with not really wanting to eat anything I havent wanted to cook either and have been eating out more and more. But we dont really plan meals for the week. Well buy a bunch of hamburger and chicken (like 10lbs each) and freeze it and kind of plan what were gonna eat based on what we have. I have found that the slow cooker/crock pot is my best friend. I love it.

  • I work afternoons and nights and H works days, so we make big meals on Sunday and eat off of the leftovers. It has really helped cut down on cooking time throughout the week.

I also make a meal plan and grocery shop based on that plan. It tends to keep me from over-buying and wasting food. Sometimes Embarrassed

  • Oh honey! You will get exhausted really quick!  I work from home and I love cooking but it wasn't practical for me to cook 3 times a day.  I decided to make a large pan of lasagna for dinner and then split the leftovers into microwave containers.  I do the same with homemade soup, chili, stews, etc.

So for lunch, I never cook anything.  I just go to my microwave dishes and pick something to eat.  That would make your life so much easier.  And with pregnancy...forget-about-it!  Cooking 3 times a day will almost be impossible!

  • I work full time, and come home to cook & prepare a hot dinner for my hubby.  I know, so traditional, but to be fair, he cleans up every night, and makes lunches, does all the "blue" chores and will do the "pink" chores just to help me out without complaining; and he BBQs every other day for dinner during spring-summer-fall.

     My suggestions....

    • crock pot
    • Do some online recipe research to find dinners that freeze well. Go food shopping to buy a lot of food for certain meals, and spend the entire weekend cooking up a storm non stop to make food that you can put into glass-pyrex-tupperware that you divide into dinner portions and single portions, and hten stack up and put into the freezer. That should last you throughout the month for sure (at least for me). It's a lot of work for 1 weekend, and you have to clean up the kitchen afterwards, but seriously, it's soooo worth it to know that all you have to do is just take out the dish the night before to defrost, pop into hte oven to reheat and serve!
    • Make a big dinner, enough for two nights. Have left overs, or freeze and pull out 1-2wks later.
    • Spend some quality time with mom or grandma, take them food shopping and pay for the food, and sweet talk them into making meals for you. HEHEHE. Since your pregnant, the older moms will definitely want to take care of you, and they'll be tickled pink knowing that you've asked them for help and they can take care of you.
    • www.kraftcanada.com.  I really like this webpage b/c it gives you simple meals with less than 5 ingredients that are easily accessible and you can buy at the supermarket. You don't have to get the kraft brand either ,but it's great ideas.
    • www.allrecipes.com - a fabulous webpage that I go to all the time. Celebrity, real, and homemade recipes, but tried by real people and rated/voted on, with pics! I've gotten some great ones!
