3rd Trimester

Dilated to a 2 for 2 weeks!!!...

Two weeks ago today at my 36 weeks check-up, I was dilated to a 2 and 80% effaced. They told me that it could be "anyday" and to be prepared for it to be soon. I am getting anxious and wondering why have I still not had this baby? Anyone experienced this same thing? Been dilated for several weeks? Im trying to be patient!

Re: Dilated to a 2 for 2 weeks!!!...

  • You can be dilated for weeks and weeks and weeks. I was 2cm for 2.5 weeks before I was induced when overdue. I've known woman who walk around 4cm for several weeks. It doesn't mean much. You can stay dilated like that for weeks, or you can go from 0-10cm in a few hours.

  • I had a friend dilated to 3 & a half for a few weeks before she went into labor!! if you're really impatient, do some non invasive ways of starting up labor :-) squats and pumping your boobs are a great starter :-D
  • The good news is that something is happening - so at least your body is preparing for labor, whenever that happens.

The bad news is that you can stay that way for a while.

I'm 3cm. Though I've had some other symptoms since finding this out (timeable contractions, lost MP), nothing's happened. I know very well it could be another few weeks.

With DD I was only 1 cm, then my water broke the next day (in my 37th week), and she was born 9 hours later.

Things can happen quickly once they start... but they won't start until baby decides s/he is ready. Hang in there!

  • Well 36 weeks is still early to deliver, so I wouldn't have been walking around waiting for that to happen. My sister walked around at a 4 with contractions every 10 minutes for two weeks- it's actually easier on your body if you dilate slowly and contract for a while. She delivered after her due date.

  • I've said it once, and I'll say it again.....I was 2+ centimeters for about 2 months with kid #1. You really can't gauge anything this way.
  • I have been 2cm for 3 weeks now with NO progression. I finally lost my MP today, but otherwise just a lot of fake contractions. I am trying to be super patient but it's really not working. I am sceduled to be induced on monday if nothing happens this weekend...which I doubt. good luck! A friend of mine saw her midwife yesterday and was not dilated at all, no effacement and had her baby at 320 this morning... so it could happen!
  • Patience is tricky.  With DD I started dialating at 34 and didn't have her until 37.5, so "any day now" is kind of mean to tell a mom who's anxious to not be pregnant anymore!
  • I have been 1 cm and 50% effaced for 3 weeks and still no baby.  I was fine with that measurement at 37 weeks b/c I was thinking I had some progress and was happy thinking she would come soon and that I would still progress.  But every week same thing.  I am due in 6 days so I am not rushing her but I am impatient b/c everything has been ready for her arrival for weeks now.  She is the only piece of the puzzle missing.  Like everyone said though just b/c you have some progress now does not mean the baby will come sooner b/c they will come when they are ready.  I have heard more stories of people having no progress and delivering sooner than those with progress.  My doc told me with her 1st baby she was completley closed the whole time and had her baby 2 days before her EDD.  I am just hoping that my little girl does not come too far after her due date.  My family and I are so eager to meet her.  She is the light at the end of the tunnel for my mom who battled cancer all last year and was just told she was cancer free on 1/3/11.

    1) Your doctor is an idiot for telling you it could be any day.

why is her doctor an idiot for saying it could be any day?  it could be any day- as in tomorrow or in 2 weeks...

  • why do people do this to themselves?  i mean, if you don't have a scheduled section or induction date, your baby will come when your body goes into labor.  no one on the face of this earth, especially on these boards can tell you when that day/hour/minute will be.  so sit tight, dream of your LO, and just wait.  wait. wait.  try not to think about it and WAIT.

  • I can't believe "they" told you that (whoever you are referring to).  2cm dilated really means nothing.  I think I was 3 cm dilated for a few weeks with #1.
  • See this is why I'm refusing internals. I know how I am and how I will react and I won't be able to handle it.

  • I was 4 cm for 3 weeks with my second and had to be induced. dilated to a 2 for 2 weeks means nothing- sorry.

That's smart of you.  This information tells you absolutely nothing.  You could stay at 3 cm for month or not be dilated at all and go into labor tomorrow.

  • With DD, I was 3-4 cm for 3 weeks.

This time, I was 2 cm at 30 weeks. Now, I'm 4 cm, and have been for a week (possibly longer, just wasn't checked before that).

So yeah, your doctor gets an eyebrow raise from me. My situation's not THAT uncommon.

  • First of all, khodge or whoever you are: you are kind of rude and I think you could have responded to this post in a nicer way... rather than insulting my Dr (who obviously knows more than you). Second of all, he has told me that I wouldn't go until my due date for months now... turns out he was right! Braelyn Ryan Hodges was born last night (38 weeks and 3 days) and he is amazing! Yay for my Dr not being an idiot!!!!!!!

Thanks to those for the helpful responses. This message board is for asking questions, right? Thats all I was doing! Braelyn is my first child and I just needed some feedback.
