Feel like such a newbie - help me out!

So I started going through Andrew's old clothes.  It was odd b/c I couldn't recall what any of his newborn clothes looked like...well...he has 6 sleepers and 2 "outfits" (Carters onesies + shorts).  That's it!  I realize it's b/c he only wore them in the hospital, not at home, and only sleepers.  I hope baby 2 can wear them at home so I can enjoy them again. :-) They are quite cute.

For 0-3 month, he has 6 sleepers and 6 outfits. (2 of his were winter clothes since he was due in April instead of mid-June)

So, did most of your newborns actually wear newborn clothing? if so, how long? Do I need more? Did they only wear sleepers?

Do you think I need more 0-3 month clothes?

the reason we only had sleepers for newborn was b/c "outfits" didn't work well in the NICU, but I'm not sure what most people do at home.

also, at my shower we got almost all preemie clothes, which we returned (NICU had) for store credits, but never worried about clothes so just made do with what we happened to have at that point.

  • I would have a few more sleep and play outfits ...at least that's what Clark wore alot of but it was cold when I had him.  I just think those are the easiest and especially the zipper ones - buttons just take too long when you have a crying newborn.  Plus it's a good reason for you to go shopping :)   But with that said he wore the 0-3 outfits and sleepers alot more than the newborn ones.  Cant wait to go through all that when it's time for baby #2.
  • For the newborn size, DD wore almost only sleepers. I didn't want to dress her in anything that wasn't super comfortable. I had a couple outfits for when we went outside the house (for dinner or something), but mostly she wore sleepers.

For 0-3m (which she started wearing at 5 weeks) and 3-6m, she wore (a LOT of) outfits during the day and sleepers almost only at night.
For some reason, I have found that we haven't needed near as many winter outfits for going out. I'm not sure if it's because she's older, or more because we don't go places as often when it's cold out.

How many do I need in the newborn sizing?

  • :: butting in ::  I would say if you are going to go with the all sleeper route and if you do delivery early (I hope not) but you may want more newborn sleepers.....like in the 8-10 range.  Especially what if you have spitter??  And if you dont want to do laundry constantly go with 12....and think 2-3 for each day (over exaggerating) then you'll be set for several days at a time.
  • We only had one set of 3 Gerber NB sleepers and then maybe 2-3 more sleepers.  We had to go out and buy NB sized clothing because all of the 0-3 and 3m stuff was way too big.  He wore some NB outfits for nearly 8 weeks and we were well into July at that point.

At home, he did wear mostly sleepers and then onesies as it got warmer but I put him in an outfit when we went out.  It didn't matter if we were just going to the store, on a walk or to the doctor.  He was in an outfit.  I really liked the Carters rompers (one piece outfits with short sleeves and shorts).  I'd say we had about 4-5 outfits in NB size.

  • remember the day you first saw me after I had Lauren?  we went to target to buy some more sleep and plays. I didn't start putting her in anything else until the last month (and whoa, it was 6 month clothing because she is a chunky monkey).  It's a pain to dress a wobbly necked baby.  I would only buy clothes if they are on super clearance or at garage sales until you know how big he will be.  It's easy enough to go out and get a couple more outfits after he comes and you know exactly what he needs.

  • It so depends on how big the baby is.  Nick was pretty average in size and was in true newborn sizes for about two weeks.  We had 4 sleepers that we rotated and I'm pretty sure he wore sleepers all the time. But, we also had some 0-3 sleepers that run on the small side, aka children's place and gerber.  Those were good to change things up and and are longer so can be worn longer than the newborn stuff. I just hated to spend too much money on something he'd outgrow in a couple of weeks.  I'd say you definitely need more 0-3 stuff.  Probably more sleepers and comfy play clothes, like the one piece rompers.

We had a spitter and went through around 2 or more a day (even with bibs). I'd say to start with around 6-8 (?) and then add more if needed.  I just remembered that we used a lot of gowns early on too. The elastic bottom made it so easy to change diapers in the middle of the night and it let DD keep her little legs all curled up together (like in the womb). I think we had around 10 sleepers and 10 gowns (but I'd say 10 gowns is way more then necessary...ours were gifts).
I have heard of babies being in newborn size for only a few weeks. If that's the case, you'd want fewer. I think it's typical for most babies to be in the size for at least a month or more though.
During summer months, we did a lot of onsies during the day and not as many sleepers. We might have used a lot more sleepers in the 0-3 size if it hadn't been summer.

  • my kid was a chunky monkey and wore an NB outfit home from the hospital. i think after the first week or so, he was in 0-3 months.
  • Andrew was a spitter, but it didn't happen immediately, so I guess that's how we got by on not many clothes.

I think I'll stick with what I have, maybe pick out a cute newborn outfit or 2, and then get some more 0-3.

Also, since I will be most likely not going past 37 weeks, I'm guessing baby will be in newborn for some time at least. (I didn't think of that originally.)

  • Ok, am I the only one on here who put her kids in gowns for the first few weeks?  OMG so much easier than all those snaps.  And yes, I had two boys.  DH was like, "NO WAY are we putting our boys in dresses," and after the first night with a Sleep n Play, he was like, "WHERE ARE THOSE GOWNS?"

Soooo much easier for NB stage, too (we were only there for a couple of days, maybe a week).  But both boys wore their gowns at night until they were busting out of them.

For the smaller NB size, I like the Carter's ones.  But when they get into 0-3, Kohls store brand are very soft, as well.

  • I fear this kid is going to come out wearing 2T. I have a few newborn outfits, some 0-3 and mostly 3-6 (co-worker donated 3 boxes to me)

  • Josie wore newborn clothing and diapers for the first month, and she was 7 lb 14 oz.  A few 0-3 weren't huge, but a lot them were.  She was born in July so I didn't use a ton of sleepers--more onesies & some cute carter's rompers.  We put her in sleep sacks at night.

  • The boys were in the NICU for 3 weeks after being born. From what I recall, they were not in NB size for that long. We had a lot more 0-3m sleepers and clothing.

I LOVE the gowns!  We used them for Ellie and got even more for Lucy.  I put her in them until she was 2 months old.  So nice for diaper changes, and I would put them on a boy too!

I agree, Kathy.  If you are going to have him at 37 weeks, he'll be smaller.  I had Ellie at 37w5d and she was 2 pounds smaller than Lucy at 40w1d.  Those 2 pounds make a huge difference!!
