3rd Trimester

Quick baby shower question

My boss came up to me today and told me they're planning a shower for me (yay!). Unfortunately, she wants *me* to choose the guest list. She said I can invite whomever I want. If it's a large group, we'll have it at the conference center here at work, but if it's a small group, we'll have it at her house after hours.

We have about 400 people where I work, and I came up with a list of 39, including myself and my immediate work group of 6 people (so 32 invitees). That would mean an at-work shower, and probably 12 of those 32 are people that I'm not close with, but would feel bad about leaving out, since I'm close with their immediate co-workers, etc. Talk about awkward! I don't want to appear gift-grabby, but I also don't want to be rude by hurting someone's feelings by not inviting them.

Alternatively, I made a list of 16 (9 invitees outside of my group) of my closest work friends. People I actually see outside of work. This size of group could be held at my boss's house, and it would be a LOT less socially awkward. I think I prefer the smaller group...and prefer that the shower wouldn't have to be at work...but ehhh, I don't know. It's sort of "tradition" around here to have a huge shower, and the honoree always ends up with a shiit-ton of awesome gifts. (Again with the gift-grabby, but it's what everyone else does!)

What do you guys think?

Re: Quick baby shower question

  • I'd go with the "lot less awkward" scenario.

  • My work is big on showers too!  But they are always onsite during work hours.  Basically, they are more of an excuse for food & a long lunch!  Smile  Honestly?  I probably wouldn't go to an offsite after hours shower for most of my coworkers.

Personally, I would go for the onsite shower just b/c it will be more convienent for anybody who wants to attend.

  • I agree, if you're more comfortable with smaller groups, go with that.  Plus, then it doesn't look like your grubbing for gifts!
  • If you're comfortable enough with your boss to be okay with the shower being at her house I'd go that route.  Since over half of the people you'd invite you hang out with outside of work I wouldn't worry too much about people not wanting to come to something outside of work hours.

  • Thanks, guys. I ended up going with the smaller group. We frequently have parties, showers, etc., at my boss's house, so that's nothing unusual...and the people who will be invited are close enough to me that they probably won't mind going to an after-hours shower.
