For those of you with LOs on milk, how much milk do they drink a day that is not watered down? And is anyone on an alternative milk (e.g. soy, almond, goat, etc.)?
S is lactose intolerant. We figured she would be - I had to cut out all dairy when I was BFing her. We've been trying cheese and baby yogurt over the last few weeks and short of being more gassy (if that is possible), she was okay. We've tried regular milk (milk mixed with formula) this week and have had major diaper blowouts, is gassy and very whiny. So it is confirmed - no regular milk for her.....poor kid......
Re: S/O milk....it's official.....
16-20 ounces but he is on a supplement for gaining weight - Kids boost essential. I am pretty sure it has everything in it, inlcuding the kitchen sink! So it is not watered down & we don't even provide any water or juice fillers because he needs the calories right now.
Piranha, you might be the one to ask on this since you have a milk allergy. S's pediatrician said to put her on goat's milk if regular milk caused her problems. Is this to determine if she has a milk allergy? Or is this better for her than say Lactaid or soy milk? And would she have a true milk allergy if she is okay with cheese (but just a bit more gassy than normal)? LMK if it is better to PM you about this. I will admit the goat's milk threw me for a loop, so I forgot to ask what her rational was behind that. My SO is lactose intolerant as well and has to either take Lactaid pills or drink Lactaid milk all of the time, so we figured she might have the same problem.
All animal - including human - milk has lactose (sugar) in it. Almond, rice, soy, etc. "milks" don't have lactose. It sounds like your LO is allergic to the protein in cows milk, so other animal milk might be OK. I learned this with Maddie because she is allergic to this also. And to make things even more fun, 80 % of the people who allergic to the protein in dairy are also allergic to soy. I had to cut milk and soy in my diet for the first year. After a year she could tolerate a tiny amount in my diet, but not much. I could have goat's milk all along. She is still nursing, so I haven't given her straight goat's milk, but that is what I'll start her on when we wean her. The protein in goat's milk is similiar (from what I have read about it) and some kids have trouble with it also, but M tolerated it fine. She winds up wit a little bit of milk in her diet in breads and such, but she is able to tolerate it better as she is getting older, esp. when the milk has been cooked/processed.
Per M's pedi, 85 % of children outgrow their sensitivity/allergy to the protein by the age of 3 and 90% - 95% of kids outgrow it by kindergarten. I am hoping that is true
.
Was going to just answer, but it got LONG, so I sent you a PM!
K has trouble with cow's milk for a while, she was a huge fan of goat's milk and it didn't cause trouble with gas or flaming backside!!! Poor thing loves milk products, but we still have to limit her or she's raw. I can tell when she's snuck yogurt or cheese, but her tolerance (intake amount) seems to be getting better. She's approaching 3 and hoping it continues to get better (she takes after me poor thing).
Oh, as for intake, from about 12-24 months she drank about one gallon (4L) a week and water (we don't usually have juice).
