A unexpected blessing...our baby girl with d.s.

We recently welcomed a new baby girl into our family...five minutes after she was born, we learned she may have down syndrome.  I started a blog to share our story.  If you like it, please join it.  Thank you!!

  • What a touching story! She is truly a blessing.

When my son was born he spent his first 3 weeks in the NICU. His blood couldn't send oxygen to his body because of his lung deficiency. I was told by specialists that he wasn't meant to be here but he lived. By the time he was 18 months old, he had been termed 'autistic' and had many delays. I mourned for him. I mourned the loss of the 'normal' child I would never have. By the time he started kindergarten it was apparent that he was not like the other kids. He was eccentric and what mattered in a class lesson didn't matter to my son. The team of specialists came in to assess him. It took months.

When they were done and their findings showed 'Asperger's' I was asked by one of the diagnosticians what I would have done if when Connor was born and the nurse handed him to me and said "Here is your autistic child, raise him." What would I have done differently? I told her "Nothing." She smiled and said "Exactly. I don't know how you did it but that little boy is going to have a far better start in school than many realize." So I pushed Connor academically. It's been a long road for us. His mind does not work the way other kid's minds do.

He is in 3rd grade now and finally can read as of last year. After being told of all the things Connor couldn't do he was again, proving them wrong. His last report card was A's and B's. For a child who was born with the odds against him, everyone telling him he can't or won't, he's been the one to show them he can and does.

God does not put more on us than we can handle. There are some days I wish God didn't trust me so much but know this, you didn't pick Augusta. She was picked for you by God. God sees something so divinely special in Augusta that only you can be sure she'll thrive. It's taken me many years to realize that God does not make mistakes and He loves variety. Connor has taught me so much. It's through him that I have learned to live spherically, in all directions. I imagine your daughter will show you how to do this too. I can't wait to see pictures of her.

Congratulations of the birth of your special angel!

  • How blessed are you!!! My dream is to adopt a child with Down Syndrome from Reece's Rainbow. I hate to sound like a total dork, but I think you are so lucky! I know many may disagree with me, but that's just my humble opinion. By the way, Augusta Evelyn is simply a beautiful name. I will follow your blog now. :)

  • congratulations on your perfect and beautiful baby girl Smile she will be the sweetest and most loving person you could ever imagine.

  • Beautifully written! God bless you and grant you continued strength...you are an amazing Mom!
  • What a beautiful story of your little girls birth. I work with adults with developmental disabilities * including MANY with Downs* and can tell you that she WILL do all of those things you hope for her, she WILL work, she WILL fall in love, she can even be a cheerleader someday. She can do anything she desires in this life, I see it every. single. day. I see adults with Downs have 20 plus year careers with the same company, have there own apartments, get married, become artists, make friends, learn new skills, be silly, be serious, drive cars, and do anything anyone else does. If Augusta can dream it she can do it! Have you considered attending your state Downs Syndrome Convention. I go every year for work and see tons of parents with little ones who are looking for the answers you are. Also contact your local ARC, they have tons of resources for your family including groups for siblings like Maverick! One more thing and then I'll stop check out this https://www.our-kids.org/Archives/Holland.html. I read this a few years ago and though I have no children myself, it helps me understand through a parents eyes what it is like

If you ever want to talk PM me.

All the best to you and your family
