Re: Extremely long pumping vent (LIP)

  • It sounds to me like you have an issue with letdown.  You can get a lot of milk but it takes a really long time for it to start coming down?  Maybe your daughter was sucking effectively but it is the letdown that is the issue.

This might sound completely crazy...and don't follow my advice without asking someone because I don't want to sabotage what you have going...but what about pumping like crazy until you can get the milk flowing and then put her to the breast?  Is that insane?

Dr. Jack Newman from Toronto is a breastfeeding guru (well known and respected)..During my prenatal classes, we watched a video of his and got his contact information.  Apparently he will answer emails!!!  Maybe google him and see if he has any suggestions about letdown?

Some people have an overactive letdown...it would make sense that others could have the opposite!

AND most importantly....you are doing an amazing job!  I hated pumping too!  Luckily I didn't have to do it often.

Feel free to vent, ask for advice, etc.!   hang in there!!

  • I totally agree it sounds like the problem is your let down reflex, not your supply... hum.... off to look for any information for you.

  • I posted in your link.
  • Ok, I found this on slow let-down on kellymom.com:

Here is another article about some homeopathic remedies such as brewed fennel to help increase pumped output and Rescue Remedy helping to elicit the let down reflex.

Rescue Remedy (homeopathic)Suggested dosage:take four drops under the tongue, up to five minutes before pumping or nursingSide effects:watch for excessive sleepinessRescue Remedy is a homeopathic tincture that has been very successfully used for calming and tofacilitate a milk ejection reflex (let-down). One version contains a combination of five flowers: cherry plum, clematis, impatiens, rock rose, and star of Bethlehem. The two brands that I've heard of are Bach Flower Remedies and Healing Herbs Five Flower Formula. Homeopathic remedies are reportedly very safe for nursing moms, because the remedies (by definition of homeopathy) contain very dilute versions of the herbs, etc. used. As far as I know, there have been no studies to determine how much of this remedy passes into your milk. Here's one source for the Bach rescue remedy. Rescue remedy has some sedative properties, so watch yourself and baby for excessive sleepiness. There is also a homeopathic Distress Remedy that can also be useful. I believe that it's considered stronger than the Rescue Remedy.

  • I reponded to your post on the breastfeeding board, but I wanted to warn against "pumping like crazy" like the PP suggested.  In theory, it sounds like it would work, but when I tried that, I ended up getting bruises on my nipples from the suction. It's almost impossible to get rid of, because you have to pump every few hours, it doesn't have time to heal.  I've had bruises on my nipples for weeks now, It's torture to pump from the nipple pain, and extended pumping doesn't help with the letdown.

    Good luck!!

I had the same problem...it took awhile for me to figure out to get a letdown.

It was a mental thing for me.  I would go to a quiet spot (the recliner in C's nursery was a good spot), turn the lights down, and calm my mind.  Then I would start picturing things...a flowing creek, a waterfall, any water related thing.  Then I had a sort of mantra that I would repeat to myself "relax, let your body do its job, make the milk to nourish your precious baby" and I would say it over and over again, as long as I could stay calm.

I know that sounds nuts, but it worked for me.  Eventually, I could put my pump on, and get the milk to letdown pretty quickly....and it was a mental thing.

You'll get there...just hang in there!  You are doing a phenomenal job.  Pumping is hard!
