HH or Crestwood??

I told you guys I was going to have a million questions.... For those of you in the Huntsville area, what are the pros/cons of delivering at either Huntsville Hospital or Crestwood??  My OBGYN is affiliated with both hospitals so I could go to either one when the time actually comes.

Re: HH or Crestwood??

  • I delivered at HH.  The nurses were nice, the facilities are nice, but I do wish they'd provide a bigger couch in the postpartum rooms..there is a nice size one in the birthing suites but only a little one in the room.  My husband stayed with me the entire time I was in the hospital and since I ended up with a c-section that was an extra night and bless his heart he didn't get the best sleep.

I have heard mixed stories about HH from others though...but I had a great experience.

  • Oh and one big advantage I see is that HH has the NICU (if you needed it which I hope you wouldn't).  Of course if you delivered at Crestwood and the baby needed to be transferred it's not like it's far, but I'm not sure if you'd be able to visit until you were discharged from Crestwood and I couldn't imagine being in one hospital and my baby in another.  But of course one would hope that you wouldn't need the NICU, but it gave me a peace of mind knowing that "IF" then it was in the same hospital.
  • I didn't know about the NICU thing.  That's a good point.  I can almost guarantee that my husband won't leave the hospital while I'm there.  Poor guy would probably worry himself to death!!  And luckily my parents are here in town so they could take care of the pets for us so Adam wouldn't need to go check on them.

  • Crestwood also does have a NICU, it's just not to the level of Huntsville's, FYI.  I delivered at Crestwood and could not have been happier!  After the delivery, we had 2 full sized hospital beds in our room for the duration of our stay....that was SO nice.  The weekend that DD was born, there were only 3 babies in the nursery, so we had LOTS of attention from the nurses and staff.  I have zero complaints whatsoever.
  • I delivered at HH  and my experience was ok. I have heard nothing but fabulous things about crestwood though. My only complaint would be that they never did get the food right at HH and they gave him a paci when I ddin't want him to have one. An honest mistake but still

You must not have read my Crestwood rantings Wink

Serioulsy though, OP, I hated everything about CW after delivery. If I could I would deliver at CW then transfer for postpartum recovery at HH.

  • Fran I didn't know CW had a NICU, good to know :)  My doctors only deliver at HH so I never had to choose, the choice was made for me.  I will say that there were 15 babies in the nursery the day A was born and I still got really good nurse care and pp care at HH.  So I think it really depends on the person and their experience.  You are going to hear good and bad about both.  I'm totally jealous that CW had an extra bed in the room...that would be nice for the dads at HH.
  • CW all the way!  I delivered at HH twice and CW this last time.  I did not have bad experiences at HH, but I just liked CW sooo much better.  Way less people, more individual attention, nurses are super nice and friendly and actually seem to enjoy their jobs, bed for DH to sleep in.  Great all the way around.  The only downside is that I thought the food at HH was better.

  • I just delivered my son 4 months ago and I was very pleased with Huntsville Hospital. The nurses were all very sweet and helpfull, and the rooms were all very nice. They were spacious enough for family to visit and friends. I breastfeed my son and had to talk to the lactaid nurse there and they were very helpfull and worked with us. My husband was comfortable as well. And kknowin the nicu there was nice especially since he was a 36 weeker. My sis delivered at huntsville and crestwood and she prefered huntsville as well. Good luck. You  can actually tour both hospitals and then decide.

Yah, I just sent DH get takeout instead of eating hospital food, lol!  Lots of yummy restaurants around there.  ;)
