This is my first post on the bump! I'm obgyn shopping and was hoping to get some feedback from those of you who have used Magee or West Penn.
I have been going to to West Penn Obgyn for the past few years. I had a miscarriage in May and I was looking to start over somewhere else (I know that sounds weird). I was thinking of trying Magee, but I'm not sure about which doctor to see. I live in the south hills, so probably the Womancare near the village would be the closest office for me.
Thanks!!
Re: West Penn vs Magee
I recently gave birth at West Penn - we also took childcare classes there as well (baby basics, lamaze and breastfeeding). I can not recommend West Penn highly enough. The classes were taught by a woman named Wendy who is also a doula and she's wonderful.
The facilities are top notch - when you are in labor and you arrive at the hospital, you go to triage specifically for labor, you are checked in and then immediately go to your labor and delivery room - these rooms are HUGE - there is enough room in there for 30 people (seriously). Some of these rooms have whirlpool tubs and you can request to be put in one of these rooms if available - the rest have showers - could be something you wish to have during labor. They have all of the equipment for delivery in each room, so once your labor progresses and you're ready to deliver, you stay in that room. You are in this room for about an hour or so after delivery. Then you move to the post partum room
The post partum rooms are also really nice. All the rooms are private rooms with their own bathrooms/showers. The whole floor is recently renovated. There is a couch that converts to a sleeper for your partner. Baby can room in with your or spend the night in the nursery.
Our son had to stay three extra days after I was discharged on the pediatric floor. I was able to stay with him since I was breastfeeding and being that they weren't fully occupied, they pulled in a chair/bed for my husband to stay as well. The nurses were amazing - and we couldn't help but rave about everyone when we were discharged. The whole West Penn experience was second to none.
Also, if you plan to breastfeed, West Penn has lactation consultants that will see you EVERY day you are there. They even visited me down on the Pediatric floor while I was there.
I've heard from many of my friends who delivered at Magee that they couldn't wait to get out of there - sharing a tiny room and no individual attention, one of my friends really wanted to see a lactation consultant but never got to see one before she left. Magee just sounds really busy - more like a baby factory where West Penn is much more care-oriented.
My 3rd child was born at Magee. This was my 3rd c-section and Magee was amazing. I'm now planning my 4th c-section and going back to Magee. The staff is wonderful. I go to the womancare center in Irwin and live in Westmoreland Co, but it's def worth the trip.
I've only delivered at Magee... and NEVER needed to share a room! So I'm not sure what went on there but it's definitely not the norm. At Magee you go straight to the Womencare birth center and are sent to triage from there. Once they are sure you're in labor it's off to the LDR. Postpartum rooms are small... but they're big enough. I delivered w/ the midwives... my first pregnancy I had an awesome med free birth w/ Tina London one of the midwives... It was incredible! My second an unwelcome scheduled C-section. My Em was breech and not willing to move. The staff was super sweet in keeping me calm. The OR staff was phenomenal! Our postpartum stay was awesome. The nurses were only as intrusive as I wanted them to be. They pretty much checked in on us a few times a day and then only came when we called. The food was AWESOME! and you ordered what you wanted when you wanted it.
I have used Womencare Associates in both Greentree and Bethel Park.My top doctors are Dr. Tabitha Delo, LeeAnn Swanson, Jason Hurt, as well as Bummer and Tetinini. I delivered at Magee for both my sons and had two C sections. Magee is top notch and always will be in my book.
My second son, Cuyler, was born with a congenital heart defect which was not detected until he was two days old in the NICU due to breathing difficulties. The doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists made our two week stay as manageable as possible and took excellent care of my son.
My postpartum nurses took great care of me, knowing that I was torn between recovery and spending my time in the NICU and worked with me so that I could be downstairs as much as possible.
The food is excellent and the rooms are quite accommodating and PRIVATE.
I also should note, my second son was delivered by another center of WCA and Dr. Griffen was amazing considering my blood pressure was dangerously high, Cuyler had problems during the delivery, and we had never met before. She kept both me and my husband calm during the procedure and even visited us the next day in my post partum room even though my other doctors had arrived and begun to care for me.
Good Luck!
