Infant constipation...when to call pedi?

Poor DD is clearly constipated. Nothing but very small, very hard poop over the last couple of days, and she has to strain a lot just to get those out. I am pushing fluids, giving prunes, doing the bicycle movements with her legs....but I am not seeing any improvement yet. At what point do you call the pedi? I also don't know what to think about her formula. She has been on this formula since early December, and we are only now have constipation problems. Do you think the formula could be the culprit? She was low on fluids for a few days, so I thought that was it, but now I am wondering if it is something else in her diet. :-(

Re: Infant constipation...when to call pedi?

  • Can never hurt to call.  I have heard a rectal thermometer with vaseline helps as well along with a warm bath.  Does A seem distended?  Hard belly?

It might be her solids that are making this happen.

Whenever we did the apples w/prunes that helped.

So sorry, no fun for anyone.  Hope it gets better soon and you are able to figure out the culprit!

  • I think it's always better safe than sorry! :) At least you'll get a sense for when to worry vs. when to just keep doing what you're doing. Will has had a couple episodes of constipation - no fun.

    Hope things get moving soon!

  • 1:1 prune juice to water helps. If all else fails, we get a glycerine suppository and use that (infant kind usually behind the counter, but OTC) Not fun, but helps fast.

What worked for will? How long did it last? I just called the pedi, and will see what they say when they call back.

Will went 6 days without pooping. We kept expecting the big bad diaper, and every morning, we would hand him to his teachers at daycare and say - um, good luck with it when it comes! And then they would hand him back at night and do the same. He was like a ticking time bomb!

Dr. G confirmed that he wasn't dehydrated (he was still peeing clear/wetting diapers) and simply suspected that he was not used to having to eliminate more solid poop. So he just suggested prunes and pears. Prune juice was another option, but Will managed to get things moving before we got around to buying it.

I'm not sure if this would help with the constipation, but since that, we have found that yogurt keeps the little man regular...almost too regular. ;) We have to keep it to once every other day. But that works really well for us!

TY! And I was thinking we would introduce yogurt soon anyways....so I think I will pick some up.

  • Mine said to call after 4 or 5 days.  (I think that's too soon for a breastfed baby)  Then they said to give prune juice 1:1 twice a day.  We've never had to do it more than twice.  But, I don't think he was really constipated because when he went it was very liquid.  But I think prune juice would be better than the prunes.

We did the flaxseed meal when Caroline was that age and constipated, and it worked immediately.  We still use it when she has trouble.
