Going back to jarred food...bad idea?

Dylan has been so picky with his eating.  He'll only eat a few fruits and veggies.  Should I just stick with these or give him some jarred food so he's getting more?  I do continue to keep offering different things, as I know it can take 10 tries or so before they'll eat it.  However, I still want to make sure he's getting a variety.  I was just hoping we were done with purees.

  • I'd just keep plugging away He was on the "healthy" side of the scale, right?

You coud do purees as a spread on bread or sauce for pasta chunks.

Leah's fav foods right now (although she will really eat anything) is oatmeal (i make both the kids oatmeal with cinnamon and a little sugar and just plop little chunks on her tray) and she likes cheese sandwiches (i just mush cheese slices - organic, of course hehe - on a slice of bread and tear into little pieces, banana chunks, any cereals, we do a lot of pasta with peas and carrots (but she won't eat the veggies if there are green beans in there...she hates those I guess). I gave her chick peas a few times and she gobbles those (I just peel them) She eat frozen cheese ravioli and pirogies when Evan does. She loves little chunks of turkey dogs. She likes eggs with veggies and cheese. I give her thin chunks of apple and she eats big chunks of soft pears.

I'm trying to give her a variety so she doesn't get stuck in the same rut as Evan! But she is good with eating whatever we eat - for now anyway.

  • Actually, he was not at the weight they wanted him to be at his last appointment.  He was 10% for weight.  They scheduled him to go back early February to get weighed again.  He is eating a lof of the foods you just listed.  It's mainly the fruits and veggies I'm having a hard time with.

  • Do you ever mix in applesauce (or pureed apples/pears) with yogurt? My kids like this too.

Are the veggie mushy enough? I also put a little dab of butter in veggies too. Evan was a big fan of veggies on a grilled cheese - I could sneak a lot of them in there with enough cheese. I also shred carrots and squash when I make homemade mac and cheese and sneak some in there.

But he isn't fooled now :( One little bit of a pea and he runs for the hills.

  • I have become a huge fan of these....https://alice.com/products?search=Happy+Tots&view=

R loves them and they are great for getting in the veggies he won't eat. I still offer veggies at meals, he gets these as a snack. I used to squeeze it onto a spoon but now I just give him the pouch to suck out the puree.

Plum baby/tot, Ella's kitchen, Happy baby/tot, Peter Rabbit are a few brands.....Alice.com is the cheapest I have found them and ship quick for free!

  • As a mom of a non-eater. I would give him what he'll eat.. I kind of felt "pressured" to take eve off of purees when she was around 14-15 months so I did.. And now she hardly eats any veggies.. or much of anything a lot of times.. I kind of regret it..

He loves applesauce so no problem there!  And he loves bananas, but that's it.  I'm going to try the pears in the yogurt though, as he has a yogurt every morning.  The last two nights I've tried pears with him he puts his nose up at me.

I use I can't believe it's not butter with so many things.  I think I'll have to be sneakier though and mix stuff in like you said!    Can you believe Dylan doesn't really like grilled cheese?  What kid doesn't like grilled cheese?  Loves cheese by itself though!

  • One of the things that I try is to change the consistency. So if I give him green beans as finger foods and he rejects it, then I mash it and try on the spoon or feeding him with my fingers. I am also going to try and cook the purees into sauce or adding them to lentils then put the lentil puree on pasta chunks. Last night he did great with fish that had been breaded and baked so I think next time I might roll it in puree then bread it and see how that goes.(only after sitting down to eat 3 different times)

Everyday it is different. If I give him lentils with pasta for dinner he will gobble it up but then the next day at school he will reject it. I have decided that he is asserting his right to choose.

While it isn't fun for us and frustrating when they won't eat anything it doesn't mean that they are doomed to be picky eaters.

Oh I also discovered if it is coated in applesauce or cottage cheese then it is good to go.

  • I see no harm in it.  You feed kids yogurt, applesauce, and pudding past the baby years.  And really, it is the convenience plus better nutritionally than those pre-packaged meals.

I have used stage 2 veggie purees in the place of jelly in pb&j sandwiches (what, who doesn't love pb and peas/carrots/spinach sandwiches??), mixed in with pasta, as a dip for tator tots.  And the chunkier stage 3 I will offer occasionally if I feel she was too picky that day.
