SA Results, Finally! What do you think?

DH and I were told that his results were not good so we knew that we would have to start looking into how to fix the issue, but we have been waiting and waiting for the actual reports and I finally got them today! So, how bad is this? He had two tests done about a week apart. On the second one they did a trial wash and the numbers for that look a lot worse than the regular results for the SA, what significance does this have? Is the trial wash result more important or just the regular result? We do not want to do IUI or IVF, we are hoping that the problem can be fixed in other ways (we are pretty sure that DH has a varicocele). So, what do you think? All opinions are welcome!

1st SA:

Days of abstinence: 2
Volume: 2.0 mL (2.0 or > is normal)
COncentration: 13 mil/mL (20 mil or > is normal)
Total Motility: 47% (50% or > is normal)
Progressive Motility: 24% (25% or > is normal)
Total Progressive Motile SPerm: 6.2 mil (10 mil or > is normal)
Morph: 6% (15% or > is normal, 4 - 14% is borderline)

2nd SA:

Days of Abstinence: 4
Volume: 2.5 mL
Concentration: 12 mil/mL
Total Motility: 42%
Progressive motility: 19%
Total progressive motile sperm: 5.7 million
Morph: 7%

Trial Sperm Wash:
Concentration 8.5 mil/mL
Total motility: 55%
Progressive motility: 22%
Total progressive motile sperm: 0.9 million (3 mil or > needed for IUI)

Re: SA Results, Finally! What do you think?

  • Hi! My DH's number's were much worse than that 7 months ago (1.3 million/ml with 36% motility...this was 2 years after our son was conceived, and we couldn't figure out how it could be so low, we were devastated).

His urologist found a varicocele and he had the surgery done in Sept. 2010. He has also been on this vitamin regimine:

    L-carnitine (2000 mg/day)
    Acetyl L-carnitine (1000 mg/day)
    Vitamin C (1000 mg 2x a day)
    Vitamin B12 (1000 mcg/day)
    Vitamin E (400 IU/day)
    Zinc (50 mg/day)
    Fish oil (1000 mg/day)
Mega Men Prostate and Virility (2x/day)
    N-Acetyl Cysteine (600 mg/day)
    CoQ10 (50mg/day)
    L-lysine (500 mg/day)

My DH's counts, motility and volume went up A LOT and his 3-month post op SA was borderline normal. We actually conceived naturally that cycle (just a few weeks ago), but sadly I am going through an early m/c/chemical pregnancy right now. But, I would say there is definitely hope for you guys to conceive naturally. We are very glad DH did the surgery and I really think the vitamins helped as well.

Sorry to barge in.  My DH has SA problems too.  I'd like to improve his numbers and get pregnant naturally.  We did it once...

Anyway, what pills does he take to get all this?  Can you get them at GNC?  Our RE recommended a vitamin that was $100 a month and we are wondering if we can get the same ingredients for less.

Baby N conceived after 1 miscarriage and more than 2 years of TTC. Diagnosis was low sperm count. We found success after 3 months of anastrozole to increase DH's testosterone and one IUI.

  • Hi Smalltownmama!  Thank you for your response and for the hope of conceiving naturally!  We are really hoping that it will work out that way for us.  I am so sorry that you are going through a miscarriage right now.  That has to be so hard after trying to get pregnant for so long.  At least you know that doing it naturally is possible.  I hope that it sticks the next time!  Thank you also for the list of vitamins that your DH is using.  I have my DH on a regular multivitamin, but if we continue having trouble I might switch to something more "powerful" for fertility.

Chicagowedded, barge away! :)  I am interested in the answer to your question too.

  • I am following this thread (new to the board) and wanted to thank you for the list of vitamins. We are on month 6 and if not PG this cycle I am going to put hubby on these for a couple of months then do a SA. I am pretty familiar with this list but nice to see it all in one place.

I too am sorry about your miscarriage:-(

  • I actually got most of the vitamins at a pretty decent cost at either Walmart or Vitacost.com (which has really good prices on the L-carnitine, Acetyl L-carnitine, Coq10, and N-acetyl cysteine). The Mega Men is from GNC ( I get e-mail specials from GNC and have gotten 2 bottles of the Mega Men for $20, not bad).

If  your doctor recommended the $100 supplement, that is probably proxeed, which just has the L-carnitine and acetyl L-carnitine and a few other vitamins that can be found in the Mega Men. It's definitely cheaper to buy the ingredients seperately. The n-acetyl cysteine (combined with the 200 mg of selenium found in the Mega Men) is also a really good supplement with studies backing up how it helps with count, volume, motility and morphology.

Also do the usual that you hear, boxers for DH, no hot-tubs or hot baths for him, have him keep his cell phone out of his front pants pocket near "the boys". Vitamins, lifestyle changes, etc. take 3 months to help, but I'm really glad we did that before jumping into IVF (which really isn't an option for us anyway).

Oh, and one more thing we did this last cycle when we conceived. DH took one Sudafed about 30-60 minutes before we BD. It's supposed to help speed the little fellers up :)

Good luck! I really feel that doctor's are pretty quick to point patients with male infertility toward IUI or IVF and give little hope for natural conception, but I do think it is worth it to try other options to improve the sperm counts and quality. I have seen a lot of success stories with low counts on other boards as well.
