Cloth Diapering

"Tough" decision (sorta CDR) re: onesies

Okay. This will be my first time CDing a newborn. I have a lot of onesies in the smaller sizes and we didn't start CDing DD1 until 3 months. My question is this: do I cut off and hem (although I know the hemming isn't required) all the little onesies or do I leave them as onesies and just size up so I don't get wicking?

  • We use onesie extenders.  DD is skinny and long, so it works perfectly for us for when she is wearing something over it.  If she is wearing just a onesie, we will go one size up.

  • Wait  - please explain more! I am still a CD newbie - and this is the first Ive heard about issues with CDs and onesies.... You are just saying that onesies shouldnt be too tight on a NB who's wearing a CD or else the diaper might leak?

The problem I had (and some mamas say they haven't had this problem, so don't freak out too much) was that the legs of the onesie would somehow wiggle their way up between Frankie's skin and her diaper cover so that the moisture from her diaper could wick out onto the leg opening of the onesie. Basically, once we started CDing, we either had to size up her onesies or not use them at all.

This happens to me when I'm on the tail end of a size. I size up now pretty often and it doesn't happen much at all.

Yeah...I'm thinking I'll just cut and hem them. Now I just have to let DH know and give him a day or two to get used to the idea of me "changing" all of DD1's onesies. (He's such a sap sometimes. It's cute. Stick out tongue)

  • I've used onesies in DD's size her entire life and can count on one hand the # of times I've had wicking issues. I don't sew, so hemming was never even an option, and sounds like a PITA.
