Trouble TTC

Bad Timing for IUI #2

I am so frustrated and confused right now.  This cycle we decided it was time for IUI #2.  Since I've been on Clomid, I normally ovulate around day 18, but when I took an OPK on day 11, it was positive!  I even took a second one because I didn't believe it, and it was still positive.  So we went in for the IUI on day 12.  Well fastforward to today, day 18, and I still have not seen a significant temperature rise.  Which of course I assume means I haven't ovulated yet, and we did the IUI too early.  Suspecting as much, I've still been taking OPK's every day, and they have all been negative.  I went in to have blood drawn today to check my progesterone level to find out definitively whether I ovulated yet or not.  I'm not too optimistic. :(

Just had to vent a bit.  Anyone out there ever ovulate without much of a BBT rise?  I have never had it happen before, but I also have been temping much earlier in the morning than normal since the IUI because my cats have been waking me up crazy early.

Re: Bad Timing for IUI #2

  • I think you have to have a temp rise to confirm O (because the progesterone), but you haven't been temping at the same time, so that could be the problem - or you haven't O'd yet.

The good news is the Progesterone level will be able to tell if you o'd yet. That stinks if you missed it. I hope you get some answers soon!

  • If I had just been going by OPKs, I would have missed both of my O days as well for my IUIs.  They have been coming incredibly early for me since we started IUIs, I have no idea why.  My normal O day was 16, 17, I've even ovulated on CD19. My 2 IUIs were on CD12 and CD11- the first cycle, my monitor did not register ovulation at all, second cycle it went straight to peak, but it was the actual day of my IUI.  The only way we got them right was because my RE was monitoring me and doing blood draws to detect my surge.

If you missed it and it turns out to be later, can't you do another one?  You are still using the OPKs right?

  • yes, if I haven't O'ed yet then we could do another IUI.  I'm just reluctant to spend the money for a second one in the same cycle - it was painful enough to pay for one!  But at least if I haven't O'ed yet we know there is still a chance to get pregnant this cycle, whether the old-fashioned way or through IUI.
  • That is frustrating...I think that clomid can also interfere with your temps.  Did your RE do b/w before your IUI?  You should have an answer when this b/w comes back.  GL!

  • turns out the answer presented itself already - the OPK i took tonight was *extremely* positive, like if we don't BD right away we're going to miss O.  so i think it's safe to say the b/w will come back showing i hadn't ovulated yet.  sigh.  another $500 down the drain.

In general, I would definitely recommend ultrasound monitoring if at all possible. I know that it will add to the cost if you are OOP but at the same time, the ability to time things better and make every IUI really "worth" it will hopefully result in success sooner for you and ultimately save you money (not to mention the medical risks of taking Clomid without monitoring). Good luck to you this cycle - I hope that it will still work out!
