BTDT, lasting effects from vaginal delivery?

I had a c-section with my first, so I'm curious.

Are things forever changed after you've pushed a baby out? I've heard that you might pee every time you cough/sneeze, forever. And also, if you've never had hemorrhoids, you may get them from pushing. And then you'll be more likely to get them forever. If you tear/cut, it's just never the "same." -etc.

Any truth to these? Is it really forever different once a baby has come out of your lady parts?

Re: BTDT, lasting effects from vaginal delivery?

  • I had a very small ds 5lbs 12 oz.

However, I did not feel any diff. I remember after I came home from the hospital in the shower I felt a teeny tiny hemi, but it went away. Never bothered me.

Well now that I'm pg I pee when I cough or sneeze, but before the extra pressure from the baby that was not a problem.

I never felt different, things went right back to normal!

    Don't worry!!!

  • I had a 7lb1oz baby 10 days late and 3 days of induction before finally having the vaginal delivery I wanted.

I did not get hemorrhoids while PG, from delivery, or after.

I did not tear badly. My doctor said it wasn't even a "degree" of anything and she just needed to hem me up a bit. Nothing major at all.

I didn't start peeing when I coughed and sneezed until I got PG again.

I felt really normal within a few days or so (minus the bleeding and slight sting when I peed). Sex after was amazing once you got back into it after the initial shock though.

  • I had a vaginal birth for my dd. She was 6 lbs 12 oz.

I for one, have NEVER peed when I cough or sneeze. Even now in late pregnancy, its never happened. ::knocks on wood:: I also didnt get hemorroids. And my pushing time was rather quick- 15 minutes.

I honestly dont feel like my vagina's different from before. I am more aware of sensations, which has actually made sex better since I feel like Im "feeling more". (If that makes any sense... LOL)

Yep, Im pretty happy with my vagina. :)

  • I asked my MIL this (she had 8 babies, 5 vaginally, the first 3 were C-section). She said "Kegals, kegals and more kegals!" She said that the first week or so she felt a little different during sex (after the initial 6 weeks of healing), but kegals toned all the muscles down there and everything went back to normal. She also never tore, but always did perennial stretching/massage with olive oil for about 6 weeks before delivery. Her midwives also performed perennial massage and stretching while she was giving birth.

On the flip side, with my youngest sister the  on call Dr. kept telling my mom she didn't need to push, and that she couldn't be fully dilated so soon, without bothering to check her (she dilated the last 4 centimeters in about 30 minutes). After about 20 minutes of begging him to check becuase she needed to push, she couldn't hold it back anymore. Because of her position (flat on her back) and because he wasn't "ready" there was no perennial stretch performed. My mom had one of the worst tears her OB had ever seen. I think it was something like 14 stitches inside and out. In her case, she said that the beginning of sex is always a little painful. This is sort of an extreme situtation though, and not the "normal" experience.

  • I had DS vaginally, very young. He was 8lbs 4oz, big guy.

I never got a hemi, and I never pee'd while sneezing or anything. I did have an episiotomy and I tore. But, after a few days it really didn't feel different and my vag has seemed normal ever since! I'm really hoping this LO isn't as big!

all this exactly - except Drew was 8 lbs 3 oz, 7 days late, and came after 17 hours of regular old labor :-)

  • I've done it both ways.  My first was vaginal, second was a running down the halls with your hair on fire emergency which earned me aVERTICAL scar instead of the nice below the bikini line one.  We were in big trouble (baby and I).  Anyway, lasting effects of vaginal birth :  nothing for me.  Lasting effects of c-section:  horrible ugly scar and having to do it again.
  • After two hours of pushing, DS was born vaginally at 9lbs 11oz.

I did get some stitches which required an additional surgery six months pp to repair because they didn't heal correctly.  First, the wasn't as bad as it sounds.  Second, it is rare.  Some people do not make an enzyme that breaks down the typical stitches that were used initially.

Everything is exactly the same down there as it was before.  I have never had hemorrhoids.  I do, however, have some pee problems when I cough and sneeze...especially when sitting.  I have had to wear a full pad for the last several weeks of this pregnancy because the peeing has gotten out of control.  It will be fine when she gets out!

Bottom line...even with all of that fun stuff, I still wouldn't want a c-section.

  • I had my DS vaginally who weighed in at 8lbs 4oz

They cut me just a little bit but I didnt feel any different after.. I never had a problem with leaking or peeing on myself!!

  • I only started peeing when I throw up since I got pregnant. never before. the only thing i think LOOKS different is my vag. i had an episiotomy though so it just looks a little different. doesn't feel different and DH said it feels a TINY bit different but not really. if that makes sense haha
  • I never got hemorrhoids  w/ my DD while pregnant or pushing.

I have snissing problems this time (didn't w/ DD) and didn't between pregnancies.

I had a 2nd degree tear.  It is still not the same.  Sex was painful for about the first year after she was born.  If there's not enough lube down there, even after that, it still hurts.  If we're in a different position and it puts too much pressure up or down (toward perineum or the opposite way - I tore both ways), it stings and if we keep going, hurts.  I'm generally sore for at least a day after sex if it lasts more than 5-10 min.

Because of the pain I was having after DD, my OB thought I might have some never damage down there.  I think they just sewed me up wrong.  It always felt like the sewed some of my outside lady bits into the stitches.  I had low platelets and wasn't clotting, so I'm sure it was hard to see down there.  My OB said she can send me to a specialist, but they won't do anything until I'm done having kids.

ETA: All my O's are much, much better now though!  It's a trade off :)

  • Well, I guess I must be the exception to the rule.  Although things have not been "bad" after delivering my first, I did feel different down below.  Also, I did have the peeing when sneezing problem.

  • It's nice to know that it's not ALWAYS the rule that you're ruined afterwards. I'm terrified of a vaginal birth because of the stories I've heard.

Thank you ladies for the stories and input, it's definitely appreciated.
