Lame TMI post: Preparing for "public viewing" question

hi hi hi

i could title this post "public pubic viewing" hahahah

question, regardless of vaginal or csection birth, the drs. shave you right?

so, my question is, did anyone prepare themselves for that ahead of time so that the drs. wouldn't have to take care of it?

i usually get waxed, but haven't really been taking care of it, 'cause honestly, it's the last thing on my mind. but i'm thinking, perhaps i should do it ahead of time? although i'm guessing that since i'm pg, i'll be more sensitive than usual.

also, i find when hairs grow back after waxing it's not as itchy as when it grows back when shaving? but i'm also thinking, the possible itchiness won't be as much as an issue when dealing with csection recovery. hahaha but i thought i would ask! hahahah

No no no no!  No medical reason for it.

Not sure about C, because I suppose they need to prep the incision are just as they would (shave) for any other procedure.

Since you are having a C I can't comment but definitely wanted to chime in to make sure other women know that you can decline (if you want... but really, would anyone WANT that?)  during a vaginal birth if it comes up.

  • They shouldn't shave you for a vaginal birth, like other pp said, it's not necessary. I did however have DH clean things up before we went to the hospital. I figured if I was the nurse or OB I wouldn't want to be staring at a jungle of pubic hair! I know I'm weird like that, not that I cared what they thought at that point but to me, it's just like washing, you wash there to keep it clean and I think shaving/waxing is like "cleaning". Just my opinion :)

no, not a lame question - because even pretty recently this practice was pretty common according to my childbirth instructor.  It also came up (don't ask how!) at a recent gtg with some of my women friends that are a little older (late 30's/early 40's) and have children that are 13 and under and most of them had it done.  Including the one with 7 y/o twins delivered by scheduled C.  Me and another woman (her kids are 5 and under) were the only ones that said, oh heck no!
  • maybe every dr is different and I had a vag delivery, but there was no shaving from the dr.  I didn't really do much...just a little trim.  I had heard on Pregtastic one of the girls got a wax right before just so she wouldn't have to worry about hair & stitches (but again vag delivery & thinking of tearing, not section).  One of my friends got a wax and said it hurt like nobody's business (but it was her first time waxing ever so it may have hurt the same)

  • Hi kini!  Like you, I hadn't taken care of things down there since that was also the last thing on my mind towards the end, but they did shave a little bit (using clippers like at a barber shop) right below my bikini line, just to clean things up around the area where the incision would be.  No biggie, really, IMO.  And I didn't feel itchy as the hair grew back because, honestly, the area around the incision (above, below, all around!) was numb afterward.  I'm slowly getting the feeling back.   HTH!

ETA: Oh, and this is totally not a lame question to ask!  My c/s was unplanned so I had no idea what they were going to do.  They mentioned shaving and I was like, "WHAT?!"  They explained what was happening and that it wasn't a full shave.  Stick out tongue

ETA #2: Come to think of it, I think they also shaved the body hair above my bikini line.

  • I'm pretty sure they didn't even shave me for the c-s.
  • I knew I was having a C, so I shaved the area myself beforehand, but they didn't even shave it at all.  I did do my best to try to clean up the nether regions, too, but I didn't wax.  Yes, you are numb in that area afterwards, but my skin was so sensitive in late pregnancy I didn't think I could handle it beforehand.  In fact, my sister waxed me (yes, my sister does it....what a great sis!) in late 2nd tri, and it hurt soooo badly!  The area was swollen as it was, and got worse after that.

  • I ended up with a c-section and like Nicole said, they didn't shave the entire area. They clipped some of it short (what can I say? my trimming standards fell down a bit toward the end of pregnancy lol) but really only shaved the area where they were actually going to make an incision. I'm sure it looked a bit wonky growing back but honestly that was the least of my worries in the newborn days. Stick out tongue
  • thanks for the input! =)

and lelekay: the story about your sister cracks me up! =) i love it!

  • By the 3rd Tri, there was no way I could SEE down there! So I did my best, but I have no idea what it looked like. I tried using a mirror but that didn't really help. I probably ended up all uneven and messy and crooked. LOL!

I had an unplanned c-section.... I think like Nicole said they shaved the top of my bikini line area. I have no idea. It wasn't really what I was thinking about at the time. I had the epidoural by then and was freaking out about being cut open!

  • I did not know about this beforehand, either! I had trimmed just to keep things tidy but it had been a few days (or longer, can't remember) so they still trimmed a little more. they did not shave it, just trimmed it and it did not itch as it grew back but like the others said, my incision was numb afterwards so i wouldn't really know! i would not worry too much about it as they are used to it :) you could trim ahead of time but i would not wax b/c i have heard it is super painful during PG!
  • I think they have to shave any hairs around any incision site (be it the episiotomy or c-section) due to risk of infection.
