Starting a little late in the game, but we have decided to CD. I wanted to from the beginning but was just too overwhelmed. I think I have decided that AIO's would suit us best. Cost aside, what brand would you recommend? (and online stores?) Also, what is the bear MINIMUM I could get away with.....just temporarily while I make sure that CD'ing is going to work for us. I don't mind doing laundry every day temporarily. Buying two dozen off the bat just seems like a lot if for some reason it isn't a good fit.
Also, storage wise.....is there any way to still use my diaper genie to dump them while they're waiting to get washed as opposed to going out and buying something new?
Thanks ladies :0)
Re: Big newb questions
I would not buy 24 of one diaper until you know what you like and works for your DS. I would suggest a trial from www.jilliansdrawers.com that way you will get a variety.
I personally do not like AIO's because they take forever to try. Pockets are pretty much the same you just have to stuff the insert.
Cloth really is easy. It's not extra work except 2-3 extra loads of laundry a week.
using a diaper genie isn't a great idea because the diapers need to have some kind of air flow. you might get mold but definitely stank. For now you can just use an old pillow case in a small garbage can. if you decide to stick with it, I suggest getting a number of wetbags.
ditto on the trial from jillian's drawers. aio's are great but take a really long time to dry so if you are only getting a couple to test it out it will be at least an entire day in between when you are able to use them. I would get the trial which, with an older LO, might be a day and a half worth.
start looking at different CD shops online and 'like' them on facebook - they are always offering sales.
I remember you! I was surprised you didn't CD because it seems right up your ally.
I suggest one-size pockets because you won't have to keep buying a whole new set of diapers when he outgrows them. Once you stuff them, they work just like AIOs. As Ducklover said, AIOs take forever to dry. Pockets also give you the ability to adjust your absorbency by adding more inserts if needed. For pockets, my favorite are Swaddlebees. They're very well made and they fit my DD wonderfully. They are lined with OBV (organic bamboo velour) and are oh so soft on her bum!
A trial would be a good idea so you can try several kinds and see what fits your DS best before investing. Or buy one or 2 of a kind and try them before buying several. Keep in mind you can sell them if you don't like them to recoup a good amount of your cost. CDs hold their value well.
And a diaper genie isn't going to work for CDs. To be honest, its going to be a royal PITA so I wouldn't suggest it. You will need a zippered wetbag or a diaper pail (kitchen sized trash can with a lid) and a pail liner. They're not too expensive.
It is right up my ally! I was just totally overwhelmed and sort of confused in the beginning DH wasn't on board. Recently though, he pointed out how chemically Milo's diapers smelled and actually suggested we switch the CD's. I am SO excited to finally get into it.
I figured the diaper genie would be a PITA. Actually, it's a PITA now as it is haha. I think I am just going to do one of jillian's diaper trials and go from there
I remember you too! Thought I'd add my 2cents since I actually like AIOs (and fitted w/ covers and pockets too). I use mostly bg elementals and they work great. They do take a long time to dry, but if you're using the dryer on a medium setting (which I've done for 6-7 months with no damage) it's not an all-day thing...just 70-80 minutes. I think the jilliansdrawers trial is a great idea. You can't really go wrong with trying a bunch of dipes out.
Ditto pp on just using an old pillowcase in a plastic trash can for now. No diaper genie.
Good luck!
So glad your DH is finally on board!
CDs are so much kinder to your LOs bum.
For wetbags, I suggest MFD (MonkeyFoot Designs on Etsy). She makes the most fantastic bags and does customs too. She is great to work with and her bags hold up beautifully.
Wetbags can be used beyond diapering years too - they're great for taking to the pool or beach, for taking on trips where clothes can get wet or dirty, etc.
First of all, your family is freaking adorable!
It's definitely not too late! I'd probably go with One Size CDs, the only draw back to that is I haven't seen a trial for OS (why, I have no idea). I never did a trial though, I started buying highly recommended CDs whenever they came up on sale on one of the deal a day sites, and bought used from kellys closet and diaperswappers.
Sure, we've run across a couple that didn't work out, but because I bought used I was able to sell them for the same price I paid and recoup my money. I know what you might be thinking, used CDs? Really? But, the ones I've bought are very gently used, usually someone tried them out, discovered quickly they didn't work, and then returned them from a trial or listed them on diaperswappers.
As far as a diaper pail, I wouldn't use a diaper genie. We use a pail liner in a cheap foot pedal operated plastic trash can from target, but you could easily get away with a large pillow case temporarily.
