Pregnant after a Loss

Pregnant and on Metformin...

I asked this question a while ago on the TTCAL board but would like to know if any other ladies that are currently pregnant (with PCOS and/or insulin resistance - I have both) are still taking metformin. The first time around my endocrinologist suggested I stop it immediately when I got a BFP and I miscarried at 7 wks. This time I asked my OBGYN what he wanted me to do and he said stay on it until 1st appt. at 8wks... and we'll go from there. I'm kinda stressed about it both ways because there isn't much known about its effects  on a fetus and also some studies suggest it can help against miscarriages. I'm interested to hear what other women are doing and what you have been told.

Thanks :)

Re: Pregnant and on Metformin...

  • I am.  I was diagnosed with mild PCOS in May, and have been on Met since then (2000 mg a day).  I'm still taking it at almost 11 weeks, just talked to my OB about it yesterday and he said we'll just play it by ear about when to stop it.  My RE had said that he thought I'd be on it all pregnancy, but I don't think my OB is leaning that way.  I'm guessing I'll stop some time in the 2nd tri?

  • My doc had me stay on it until 12 weeks.

But, since I'm PCOS+IR, I will have the gestational diabetes test earlier than most (20 weeks), since I'm at higher risk for it.

  • My doctor diagnosed me earlier this month, and has me on Metformin. I'll be on it through late second trimester. He told me yesterday that it reduces my chance of miscarrying significantly because the insulin issue is related to the plasma growth in the placenta. I don't know the technical terms...sorry.

  • Its one of those things that everyone has different recommendations.  My RE said that he would leave it up to my OB, that I could go off of it anytime or stay on it through pregnancy.  Last time I talked to my OB, he indicated he would keep me on it through the 1st Trimester.

  • My OB had me stay on it until 12 weeks. He said that in his research it helps with reducing the risk of miscarriage and felt it was safe to be off of it at that point.  I was diagnosed as having signs of PCOS and IR before getting pregnant.  I had to take the glucose test early due to taking the metformin and passed with flying colors.

  • Thanks so much ladies! I'm glad I'm staying on it this time... anything that can regulate my body for this baby is great! Now another question - I just got my first hcg levels back and I'm at 161 at 4 weeks 4 days... I'm hoping this is in the normal range.. I know that I cannot really judge until I get more done and make sure they are increasing - just wondering if any of you know if it's in the normal range??

Thanks for all you input! It's so nice to come here with my many, many, MANY concerns!!
