Has anyone sold their wedding dress?

I am thinking about selling my wedding dress. It is just sitting in my Mom's basement, and I really don't want it there. So I was thinking about selling it to fund the purchase of a new camera lens or something. Has anyone else ever done this? Did you use a consignment shop or a website? How much did you get for it compared to what you paid for it?

Re: Has anyone sold their wedding dress?

  • I was a two-dress bride and had to sell my first.  I put it up on preownedweddingdressing.com and onewed.com.  It should through onewed, but I got an offer through the other as well.   I originally paid $700 I think and I sold it for $350.  I could have probably gotten more, but I just needed $350 to cover other expenses.

  • I also sold mine on preownedweddingdresses.com  DH and I were BROKE when we first got married and needed the extra cash. I also had to be realistic that it was just going to sit in a box and never be worn again and moving it every 3 years while DH is in the military didn't sound fun either. My dress was $850 and I sold it for $350.  Occasionally I am sad I sold it but I know it was a smart decision.

  • I'm too sentimental, so mine sits in a preservation box doing absolutely nothing.  I wish I could let go and just sell it, but I get sappy about these things.

  • I was very lucky and my parents paid for my dress. I'm sure it would of sold for a nice amount. However when we were on our honeymoon my dad(who is such a cutie) took my dress had it cleaned and preserved. So now it sits in my old closet at my parents in what we lovingly call the dress coffin. Lol. I'm waiting for the day when I get to open it to make a christening gown for our baby. We know a lady who makes them out of the dress and embroiders our initials and wedding date into hem along with baby's initials and baptism date. Yes. I'm a super sap.

  • I am not that sentimental about my dress, I loved it, but after losing all this weight it wouldn't even fit me anymore, and I would hope that my daughters will be healthier than me and wouldn't be able to wear it. I am def. keeping my veil though because I love it! Thanks for the tips ladies. I got my dress for $1300 so I would hope I could get $600 for it, but who knows. I think after I go take pics of it next week I will post it on preownedweddingdresses.com

  • Just an FYI- I had a lot of interest in my dress and had several requests for very specific pictures, i.e the arm pit area, the bottom, etc.

I also kept my veil, shoes and other more sentimental accessories :)

  • I give you a lot of credit for being able to sell your dress.  I know it makes sense - I'll never wear it again, but I am far too attached.  I just love it so much - I can't part with it.
