Trouble TTC

No Metformin before HSG?

My nurse just called to tell me to stop the Metformin until after my HSG next Wednesday. Apparently, the medication interferes with the dye that they use.

I have never heard this before, but I'll follow the directions!

(it's just getting to be a challenge with the Met, because I was back on it for 3 weeks, got really sick, had to stop taking it during the time I was sick/on antibiotics, finally started back on it on CD1/this past Saturday, and now I have to stop again for a week. It's kind of annoying!)

  • Yes this is true, they didn't have me start Met until after my HSG but I had just started testing.  Good luck :)

  • That's good to know. Yeah, I've been through all my testing, but the new RE wants another HSG. Silly really, especially since I have to miss a whole day of work (the hospital is too far from work to go in before or after).

  • I had to stop taking it, too. I stepped back up slowly again to minimize the sickness. Good luck!

They didn't tell me to stop taking Met either. It hurt, but luckily I haven't had any other bad reactions (my HSG was last month).

  • The contrast dye that is used during an HSG is slightly damaging to the kidneys, only temporary though. Therefore, your kidney function is slightly diminished for approximately 48 hrs after the procedure. Metformin is removed from the body by the kidneys, and since the kidney function is diminished, the Metformin can build up in the body. This can cause more problems.  Typically Metformin is withheld for 2 before and 2 days after a procedure with contrast dye, depending what procedure it is. Just drink lots of fluid after the procedure to flush the dye out of your system.  Good Luck!
