July 2011 Moms

dentist wasn't nearly as bad as I expected

I had such bad anxiety about going for a cleaning since my gums have been SO sensitive and bleeding a lot, but it wasn't any worse (discomfort-wise) than a regular cleaning, though he did have to stop a few times for me to rinse all the blood away (sorry, gross).

Anyway - I'm trying to get in there for another cleaning in mid-June (5 months) instead of July, when the baby is due. They said they have to check with my insurance, I'm hoping it's okay because it'd just be one less thing to worry about after the baby comes.

Re: dentist wasn't nearly as bad as I expected

  • I went to the dentist last Friday too.  I haven't had any problems with sensitive gums or bleeding.  My major worry was throwing up on the poor hygienist.  That's the only day in the past 2 weeks that I've taken a Zofran.  Luckily it went better than I expected (she was probably more gentle because I warned her in advance.)  I actually ended up enjoying my visit because my newDentist is also from WI and she just had a baby last July, so she was telling me about it.

  • FWIW, my dentist will discount a cleaning if you are coming in more often than every 6 months. I try to go every 4 months, so he only charges me $45 for the extra cleaning.  Is it possible to ask them if they could do something like that for you?

I am a first year DH student and from my understanding they dont change anything.  We practice on each other and I am also in radiology and teachers say its all fine. The only thing you cant get is local anesthetics like if you have a cavity or whatever.  And if your BF and you get local then you just throw away anything you pump 7 to 8 hours after.

I went in for a cleaning as a new patient.  Nothing changed for the cleaning.  They are just putting off doing xrays until after LO is born.  I don't know as far as fillings or other dental work.

This. He didn't do anything different, but he did give me 2 breaks to thoroughly rinse since I was bleeding a lot.

As far as cost, I have a $50/year deductible for dental insurance, so I'm not worried about the cost of cleaning. The receptionist just said that some insurances only cover once every 6 months, some cover 2 a year (doesn't matter how close/far they are) and some cover by cost so she had to check which mine was.

  • Thanks for posting this! I need to reschedule my cleaning that I canceled right before my BFP! I'm glad to hear it wasn't too bad for you.
