Trouble TTC

Did you go to any urologist appointment?

I really want to go and hear for myself what the doctor says.  After Dh's first SA, he thought the nurse said 20 million, but she said 6 million.  We were under the very wrong impression that DH had a normal sperm count for 6 months.  I would like to prevent miscommunications like this.

Anyway, did anyone go with their Dh?  What happens at the first urologist appointment?

Thanks!

Baby N conceived after 1 miscarriage and more than 2 years of TTC. Diagnosis was low sperm count. We found success after 3 months of anastrozole to increase DH's testosterone and one IUI.

Re: Did you go to any urologist appointment?

  • I didn't go with my husband, but he told me about it.  They did a medical and sexual history, physical exam (I know some drs. do a prostate exam during the appt., MH's did not) of the penis/testicles.  Depending on what the dr. finds they may also do an ultrasound of the area.  MH's bilateral varicocele was apparent from a visual exam, so no u/s was needed to confirm.  They also talked a lot about the diagnosis, ordered a repeat SA, and gave him a lot of paperwork about his numbers, diagnosis, and procedures that could help.

  • Yep, I tagged along for DH's first urology appointment (to discuss the results of SA#1, which showed low morph).  The doctor discussed the results with both of us, did a physicial exam of DH (I stepped out of the room for that part) and then gave us an order to get SA#2.  I am glad I went to the appointment because, if nothing else, it made me feel better to hear everything directly from the doctor.  I won't be able to make it to DH's second urology appointment (to discuss the results of SA#2, which we were told also showed low morph), but plan to write a list of the questions that I want to be sure DH addresses with the doctor.  Since DH has a tendency to forget things, he was actually the one who suggested that I write a list for him!

  • DH went to the urologist the first time before he had an SA. I went and sat in the waiting room, mainly as emotional support since he hates going to doctors. :) He said the doctor did a medical history, physical exam, and asked some questions about our TTC history.

After we got the SA, DH had a second appointment. I went into the room for that one; the doctor explained the SA results and what our options were. Since I had researched so much about MFI, I was the one with all the questions. :P

  • Good, I won't feel like a fool for going with him then.   Thanks, everyone!

  • I also went with him the first time, mostly because I am much more on top of the infertility lingo, and our RE had communicated his first SA results directly to me. The uro we saw specializes in MFI and I noticed that the patients before and after us were also couples, so I think that's normal.

At his first appointment he gave a urine sample, then the Dr. reviewed his medical history form and asked us some questions.  I left the room while he did a physical exam - including a prostate exam since my husband is over 40 (this was optional). We then sat with him in his office, and he explained the next steps/tests.

  • DH had his first appointment on Monday and I went with. I plan on going to all appointments with him. I wanted to make sure all our questions were asked and we got all the right information.

They took our history and did a physical exam of his testicles. I warned  him they might do a prostate exam (which thoroughly freaked him out) but they didn't. Then he gave us an order for a 2nd SA and some bloodwork. We are meeting with them again once all the results are in. So far the bloodwork is all normal and he is doing the SA in the morning.
