So I'm trying not to be judgmental, but something is bothering me. On FSOT a lot of mamas say they're selling stuff b/c of some unexpected expenses. A lot of these expenses are in the $200-500 range and these mamas seem to have a LOT of wraps that are pretty expensive. It seems to me fairly questionable to have so many wraps when you don't even have emergency money in the bank.
Anybody else? Or am I missing some vital information?
Re: I'm puzzled
I don't know if its fishy (which it may be) or just proof of the amount of debt we have in America.
It does drive me craaaaazy to see some peoples stashes, and then see them "needing to sell this right away" because I can't afford a wrap at all. I make do with DIY tablecloth wraps and my SSCs (which I love). I see their THOUSANDS of dollars worth of wraps and kind of seethe a little. Mainly because, like you said, they aren't selling some wraps to buy another one. That'd be fine with me, because they obviously have the money to do such things, but that they need to "meet some unexpected expense"
It does make me ponder as well.
Between the economy and it being just after the holidays alot of moms just don't have money in their savings accounts.
Also, many of them have been collecting their wraps over a LONG period of time (most through 2 or 3 babies) and probably purchased them when they were and thought they would continue to be financially stable.
On the other hand there are some moms that just make the mistake of buying wraps when they shouldn't have.
I'm not on FSOT, but I view it like anything people collect. Some folks just go overboard, whether it be with wraps or antiques or art or whatever and then when they need money quickly, they realize they are sitting on thousands of dollars in ____ (insert whatever has been collected).
And, the case may be that they do have emergency money in the bank, but they'd rather sell a wrap than dip into their funds. It's also possible they're hyping up the situation to appeal to the buyer's sense of urgency.
Just speculating. I only own three carriers and all were given to us as gifts.
I own well over $1000 worth of baby carriers that I've been collecting since DD was born. Also since DD was born over 3 years ago, DH has taken a 90% paycut. :-/ The resale value of my stash is nowhere near what I paid for it, but if I needed to I could totally see selling it off to take care of an unexpected expense. Better to do that than to dip into what's left of our savings fund!
Also, most of mine I scrimped and saved for and others I traded to acquire. Heck, I traded an entire professional wardrobe for a Kleinsmekker before they were sold in the US! I think a lot of other mamas on FSOT have done similar things- scrimped in other areas and cut corners on other things in order to get the carriers they wanted.
I know I've done this... just not for a wrap, but for my Ergo. I saved for mooooonths and begged for one for Christmas.
Perhaps this is what it is, and my snarky side is just coming out as well... I do think that some people tend to make the situation sound worse than it is. I haven't bought anything in almost a year, but it does seem like Mamas keep getting burned. Sad
