Trouble TTC

what's the definition of mild/moderate/severe MFI?

What are the borders?

Baby N conceived after 1 miscarriage and more than 2 years of TTC. Diagnosis was low sperm count. We found success after 3 months of anastrozole to increase DH's testosterone and one IUI.

Re: what's the definition of mild/moderate/severe MFI?

  • A website I was looking at today said anything under 10 million was severe. Another website I saw said under 20 million is significant MFI and under 5 million is severe. Either way we fall into the severe category :(

  • I dont know the exact parameters but MH is considered mild because he has a high count, borderline motility, and poor morphology.

ANd was that total sperm or per ml?  My RE just looks at the total number of "swimming" sperm and DH was at 7 million of those, which was not enough to do IUI.

7 million motile sperm and they told you it's not enough to do an IUI?  That is VERY strange. I have seen some clinics not want to do it under 5 million, some under 1 million, but a cut off higher than 7 million seems pretty severe. I know Cornell does them with anything above 500,000.  Have you considered a second opinion?

  • RE said he would do it, just that he would recommend IVF with those numbers.  That's good to know.  I felt like we'd be totally out of the game for IUI if the SA didn't improve!

  • Yeah, I thought it was 5 million for IUI too.

Ah, that makes sense :)  Hopefully you can get to a point where his counts are high enough for you all to feel comfortable doing an IUI.
