Medical folks...question on recurrent sinus infections for a baby

If a 7 month old had recurrent sinus infections, beyond the pediatrician, what's the next step?  ENT?  Allergist?  If you have any recommendations for the North or West side for a doctor, that would be great too.  Thanks!

  • ENT. you may or may not need a referral from your pediatrician. maybe kathy can recommend one?  good luck!

  • Andrew's was solved by ENT & GI - which also did allergy testing.

His was a  result of his reflux and his adenoids were way too large, so his sinus couldn't drain yet were continually irritated by reflux.

I would start with ENT.  They xrayed Andrew's adenoids and they also work closely with the GI doctors.  They also did allergy testing & other bloodwork (celiac, immune system, by my request but I think they would have done it regardless.)

    I really liked Hamaker.

  • I personally have had many sinus infections due to allergies. I believe kids that young haven't really developed seasonal allergies yet but maybe I'm wrong. I've had to get allergy shots (though I always end up stopping and then restarting when my allergies get bad again) but the shots have really helped if that's what is causing it.

But again, for a kid that young I don't think it'd be allergies. Rowan saw Dr. Trigg at the St. V ENT group and he did a good job. Obviously Rowan only had ear problems though so I can't help you much otherwise!

I think it's less of seasonal allergies they suspect (rare) and more of other allergies.  They did test Andrew for about 13 things.

They did say it's rare (as you suggested), but may be worth ruling out and a blood test is the best way.  I don't remember all what they tested him for but I do know they did eggs (he got hives after a shot once) and mold (I am allergic to) and a bunch of other standard things.

My coworker's kid is allergic to everything under the sun ( granted he gets rashes), but his skin test was neg and all bloodwork positive.

  • Thanks you guys!!
