I am so stuck!! I love Katherine and Susannah
Katherine- it's classic. Really no matter what kind of person she turns out to be, popular, nerd, brain, struggles, ...etc Katherine will fit. Nicknames are vast. My con is that it's so traditional that it might blend in too much. I don't want my child to stand out in a weird way (like naming her Moon Child Delux or something) but I also don't want her name to be something your eyes would slide right over if you reading a classlist.
Susannah- My middle name is Susan. I like the nickname Susie and the adult name Susannah. It's a real name, it's classic, but it's not over used. Cons- a lot of people don't like it. It might be considered a little strange by her peers because it's not a very popular name. What if she turns out to be a quirky, little nerd, would her peers use her name as a way to tease her? Is it too 70's?
DH loves both. I love both. I pretty much told him last night that he can pick either one and I would be okay with it!
I know it seems obsesive, but I've been waiting to name my child for 30 years!!
Help!
Re: I know I keep asking about the same two names but..
I love Katherine. Lots of spelling and NN options. Very strong and classic. You're over thinking the "blend in" thing.
Susannah... Don't like it and I don't know why. I'm sure you already know what comes to mind first when I hear that name.
Why not wait until she's here? Maybe things will seem a bit clearer then?

I like Katherine. I like Susannah too but agree that it might be too quirky if she doesn't carry it well.
ETA= "carry it well" sounds bad. I just meant if it clashes a bit with her personality.
I really like Katherine, but I know so many Katies, Kathys, etc. It is a great name.
But, I love Susannah. Love it. Beautiful name, not as common, cute nicknames (Susie, Suzy, Anna) if you like that route and overall, I think it's a great name.
Ditto this. I think Susannah is beautiful and flowing, like a sunny Southern afternoon. I don't think you have to worry about it not "fitting" her because you can always go with whatever nickname does fit her the best.
I'm not a fan of Katherine. It's too formal. I've known a lot of Katherines and not a single one of them was any fun.
My name is Catherine. I love it. I've never been a Katie or Kate. Oddly enough four totally unrelated people in my life call me Kate, and I am ok with it. I grew up as Cathy and really don't like it at all. My nickname is Cat. I like it. It's edgy I guess. Some close friends say Catty. I introduce myself as Catherine and people immediately say, "What do you prefer to be called?" I say Catherine. (seesh - never typed my name so many times).
I also love Susannah. It's simple and classy. Good luck with choosing.
I'm a Katherine!! Everyone in my life calls me Katie, except at work (I'm a lawyer) I go by Katherine to my clients and opposing counsel. I think it's the best of both worlds because I like Kaite as a nickname, but it's a lot easier to take Katherine seriously in a courtroom.
I like Susannah too, but it's harder to spell and you run the risk of people calling her "Suzy".
And to one of the previous posters - It's too bad you've never met me, I could change your whole opinion of the name because I'm fun
This. I really like Susannah! I think Katherine is nice, though quite formal and I know/have known a lot of Katie's, so it's also very common.

I'm a fan of Susannah. I think if you pick a name, she will grow into it. Katherine is a good name, too... but because Susannah is not as popular, I like it a little more.
Do you definitely want to pick a name before she is born? I think if you are so stuck between two names, then maybe waiting until you meet her will help you decide.... especially since you said you would be happy with either one.

Ive always liked katherine, though my youngest cousin was named that. I also like the versatility of the name. We are thinking about going with Kassandra because there are so many nicknames she would be able to use.
You might want to think of which goes better with middle names. Ive been having a hard time with that. Are there any middle names that you guys like? Do they match better with either name or would you decide based on which first name you like best?
As a girl, you also might want to think of which is better with a wider range of last names, since she may decide to change her last name when she gets married.
