Parenting after 35

What pedi advice did you ignore?

To continue the pedi subject has your doc ever given you instructions/advice that you did not follow?

My pedi told me to stop signing with Matt but I still do and I continue to teach him new signs.

When Matt was sick he told me to give Matt pedialite but I found an organic version.

I know, I know I am a rebel!!

Re: What pedi advice did you ignore?

  • Honestly, my pedi(s) really don't give me a lot of advice.  I did ignore the advice to give him hepatitis vaccine in the hospital (waiting until he was 2 months old) since he wasn't having sex or using intravenous drugs as a newborn. Wink

  • I ignore the advice to raise the crib mattress on one side when she has a cold. She moves around all over the crib and would never stay with her head on the raised side. I also ignored the advice about a humidifier. SF usually has 70% humidity and we always have the windows open as it is pretty warm during the day. Dry air is non existent here. We also opten to give her the hepatitis vaccine when she was 2 months old for the same reason as mtnrider.

  • I'm another one who didn't receive enough advice to ignore.
  • I have never really gotten "advice" to ignore. It has all felt very run of the mill and that's why our next appointment in April is with a new Pedi. I am so excited to be switching (finally)!

  • Pedi told me to fill DD full of calories, no matter what they were (ice cream, etc) when she was 9 months old and fell a couple percentile in weight.  I ignored that.  DD has never been a big eater (from the very beginning) and I didn't want to fill her full of junk to have her learn bad habits and maybe gain an ounce or two.

  • I can't think of anything!  I don't think we've gotten a lot of advice outside of "OMG go to a cardiologist!"

    Wait, I've got two things.

When Margaux was jaundiced the pedi told me to stop breastfeeding and give formula "to flush out her system."  I did not.  She flushed it out on her own just fine.

When Margaux had bad baby acne and rashes, he advised me to start weeding things out of my diet, to see if it was an allergy.  Instead I cut out detergents and soaps, and that worked.  Good thing, because I think that advice was probably worthwhile.

  • We have had the same pedi for 16 years now so I really don't get advice anymore or remember what I ignored. One big change was the sleep positions for newborns.  My first was back only. By the time the 2nd & 3rd got here it was the side then finally tummy only with T.

I am old school and cheap so I use flat 7up instead of pedialite.

Why did your pedi want you to stop signing?  We are teaching T to sign and she is tells us so much by signing.

  • Pedi suggested I keep DD#1 on formula until 15 months after we stopped breastfeeding at 11 months. She got very sick for a week and dropped on the chart at her 12 month appointment. I ignored him and went to milk at 13 months. She was fine and my bank account thanked me.

  • My pedi is great and I respect her completely.  However, she told me not to let my older DD watch TV until she was at least two years old.  My pedi is a working mom with one child.  I knew she didn't understand what it was like to stay at home with two children under the age of two, so I completely ignored her on that subject.  I've never ignored her on the big stuff though.

  • To not let S get attached to a pacificer.  She is totally against pacificers and would prefer for kids to suck on their thumbs.  S never got the hang of that and likes the pacificer to go to sleep.  So now, we end up hiding it when we go to the appointment.  I know - I'm bad......

I know. The words Matt learned first were the ones he knew the signs for.

The pedi was worried that with learning two languages on top of signing that it was hindering his speaking.

  • There is some of the standard advice that I push back on and them we come to a compromise. E.g., she suggested vitamin D drops bit when I asked about sunlight exposure instead, she was ok with that.

That's ridiculous!  How are you supposed to get rid of their thumbs when it's time to wean them???  My pedi loves the pacifier, it keeps babies calmer during their appointments!
