Group B Strep Positive

Anyone else?  I've been reading up on it but still not sure what to expect.  All I've really learned is to get to the hospital in time to be on an IV for 4 hours before LO arrives.  Anyone have any experiences they'd be willing to share?

Re: Group B Strep Positive

  • I had it with my son but not my daughter. I had the test done this time but I don't know what the results are yet.

Yeah, basically they give you IV antibiotics before you deliver. The kept an eye on him after for signs of a fever or infection (just extra monitoring in the room, no NICU required for that) and it was fine.

Really isn't a big deal now that you know... it is time to worry when it goes untreated.

  • I haven't personally experienced this but my brothers GF gave birth in November and she was positive also. She had the IV for 4 hours then they started her on pitocin and got things moving but they wouldn't do much until she was finished with the antibiotic(I think that's what they give). The baby was born completely healthy and she was fine also.

  • I was GBS+ with DS.  I had a natural L&D and needing the antibiotics just meant that I needed to get to the hospital earlier than I otherwise would have chosen to...they want you to have the IV 4 hours before you deliver.  It was fine...I hated the contractions when I needed to sit still for the IV to be administered and the external monitors on me, but once the bag was empty, they locked the IV and I was able to go back to laboring the way I wanted.  Everything was fine!

  • I was postive with both my pregnancies. I didn't make it the hospital in time for either to have the 4 hours of meds. They just watch the babies closely after they were born and all was well. This time the doctor didn't even bother testing is just planning to treat me like I am positive. Since we are planning an induction I *should* in theory have the 4 hours of meds this time.

  • I was positive last time, not sure about this time yet.  They just wanted to give me 2 bags of IV antibiotics before I delivered DS, but he ended up coming so fast that by the time my first bag was done and they sent for the second one, I was ready to push.  So, no second bag.  DS was fine.  Not sure if they did anything special for him after delivery since they were already concerned due to his low heart rate and kind of whisked him over to the nurses quickly, but I don't think they did anything special.

It was fine and you'll be fine!  Nothing to worry about!
