Settle a Debate

Do you consider sweet potato "fries" cooked in this manner to be a healthy addition to a lunch and/or snack? Why or why not?

-2 sweet potatoes, sliced to fry shape. Tossed with 1tsp or less olive oil, paprika, and cinnamon. Baked in the oven on a cookie sheet until crispy.

Re: Settle a Debate

  • I have no clue if it's a healthy addition, but it sounds good to me!

  • I consider them healthy if they're baked and not fried.

  • It sounds relatively healthy to me.  If they were fried it would be a different story, but since they're baked, I think it sounds ok.

  • Yes, I'd say it's healthy. The most "unhealthy" thing is the olive oil, but if you're only using 1 tsp or less, it wouldn't matter. And it's baked.. not deep fried. That's the clincher! :)

There are definitely WORSE things out there.

  • i'd give it to DS
  • Since their not fried in oil and baked in the oven with a little oil I think they are pretty healthy. I know there are much worse snacks.

  • Healthy.

Olive Oil is good for you in moderation. And sweet potatoes are great for you.

  • Yes I think it is healthy and now I am hungry, thanks.

Oh why do I think it is healthy: because sweet potato's are healthy and olive oil esp. extra virgin has healthy fats in it, and you aren't frying them you are baking them.

  • Out of curiosity, OP, who is the debate betwee, and which side are you on?
  • i say they are a healthy and quite honestly DELICIOUS snack! they aren't deep fried like french fries usually are . olive oil is good for you, and baking potatoes is also good for you. its a win win situation!
  • Healthy, like pp's have said.  DD eats this frequently!
  • Sweet potatoes are rich in vitamins and fiber. Olive oil has monounsaturated fat and can lower your risk of heart disease. Definitely a healthy choice.

    Here too!

This is in the regular rotation for DD and I for lunches--I make them maybe once a week (sometimes more, sometimes less). I get a TON of flack from family members about giving "fries" so often. I can't tell you how many times I've explained that these are NOT deep fried, but oven roasted.  Still, I get crap for it. And I was convinced that this was a healthy option, and just wanted some confirmation from other moms.

I think I should just start calling them "Oven Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Savory Herbs" and the family would probably start raving about how much better a choice they are than the sweet potato fries, lol!

    LMAO!

  • That's so frustrating. Healthy food does not just include steamed vegetables. And it does NOT mean fat-free. H*ll, it doesn't even mean LOW fat.
  • Out of curiosity, do these reheat well? DD seems to love sweet potatoes, but neither DH or I are fans. She would love these, but doesn't eat much in one sitting.

This. Sounds like somebody needs to take a nutrition class!

Same situation at our house.  DD could live on sweet potatoes, but DH and I...not so much.  DD likes them just as well re-heated.  She's not picky at all, so that may factor in to it.  I usually make this once per week, and she'll eat it over a period of 2-3 days.  You can always re-heat it in the oven to get it the right texture.

Thanks. I've never cooked a sweet potato in my life, but we went to Texas Roadhouse with my parents and she LOVED the sweet potato my mom fed her (and she's always loved sweet potato baby food).

They're so good for you, wish I liked them myself, but I just don't!

I'm not sure how well they reheat--I usually only make one or two potatoes at a time, which is enough for us. I CAN tell you that the cut sweet potatoes (prior to going into the oven) will keep at least overnight in the fridge. I accidentally cut too many sweet potatoes yesterday--I wasn't sure how they'd keep (since regular potatoes tend to get nasty), but I tossed them in a Ziplock in the fridge to see. They were totally fine. Did them for lunch and they tasted great.

So, maybe you could just cut one sweet potato at a time, and do half one day and half the next?

  • Yes, it's a good thing to eat. Veggies should always include a little healthy fats to aid the body in absorbing nutrients. You should always add something with steamed veggies too like a sprinkle of cheese too.
