Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If you SAH now, but have plans to return to work or school.

At what point do you want to go back to work or school? Once the kids are in school, before then?

I've been wanting to go back to school and have been looking at Oct. of this year which would put the girls at just over 2 and 10 mos. The program that I want to do is 2 days a week from 6pm to 10, and two Saturdays a month.

I'm struggling with wondering if that's too soon to go back and if it would be better for me to wait till they're school age, but part of me wants to be work ready by the time they get to school.

DH isn't crazy about me wanting to go back when they're still that little, but I don't think 8 hours a week is too much to have them with a babysitter, especially when they'll be in bed for half that time. He's home on Saturdays so they'd be with him then.

What are your plans?

  • My plan is to go back to part-time when they are in elementry school and then maybe find a full-time job when the oldest is old enough to drive and can help take care of younger siblings.

As for me, I plan to go back PT when I do back and stay that way for a long time; I want to be available when the kids are home from school. With my profession, that should be no problem as long as nothing happens to DH so I don't have to rely on myself for benefits!

I'm thinking about putting the boys in preschool in the fall (at 2y9m) and starting to work very part-time then. They would only go 2-3 mornings a week. I *might* hold off till they're 3.5 but we'll see. DH and I really need to figure that out, since fall preschool enrollment is happening now!

  • I did stay home then went back to work PT by choice. The big thing with school is remember that you will have homework on top of the class time. As a prior instructor remember that night classes are usually very heavy work load so have a few back up childcare plans in place so you don't have to miss class and get behind. I think if you feel up to it going back to school is a great transition back to the working world outside of the home. I work 20 hours per week now I went back when DD was 11 months and it has been a great thing for both of us.

  • Have you considered online school? I am finishing up my Masters in Teaching online and it has been so much easier than actually going to school. I plan to go back to teaching when my kids are in school.
