TTC After a Loss

Did you wait...

to start TTC again until after your first AF?  Just talked to the doctor and my HCG is down to 15, so I just have to come back in a week to make sure it is under 5.  She said to wait 1 full cycle before TTC.  Her reasoning was that is my HCG goes back up again, they don't want to be guessing if it is a new pregnancy or not.  We are ready to start TTC again right away.  What was your experience?

Re: Did you wait...

  • Always listen to your doctor. I waited 1 cycle the first time, and 3 both other times.

I would feel horribly guilty if something were to happen if I got pregnant right away, and would blame myself for not listening. Your body needs some recovery time.

  • Wait, they are doctors and you pay them to help you. Listen to them. It sucks to wait, but if something happened would you want to second guess yourself?

  • Yes I listened to my doctor's advice and waited until after af had shown. And emotionally I wasn't ready to try again that soon. But that's just me.

  • Sorry girls, I didn't realize it was a flameworthy question.  There are lots of people who get pg again right after a m/c (and yes, also plenty that don't), and go on to have healthy pregnancies.  Sooo...that tells me that not everyone chooses to wait.

  • How are we flaming? We answered you and also told you the general advice. I'd suggest you read through the TTCAL blog :)

  • I would trust in what your doc says.  My doc said that it was ok to start again after I got my first AF.  I am folllowing his advice.  To each their own, I guess.

Thanks, I will take a look.  I appreciate everyone's advice.  After I saw the "and...go" reply, I was preparing myself for an slew of flaming replies.  Usually the comment preceeds them :)  This must be a question that is asked quite often.

Some people's doctors tell them there's no reason to wait. If your doctor says to wait, then wait.

This is something that gets asked all the time and usually by people that don't show themselves to be the brightest. This wasn't even close to flaming. A lot of people do get pregnant right after m/c because they are told they don't have to wait. Some people just don't listen, and some people don't listen and lose the next pregnancy too. Your doctor knows your case. Listen to them.

So why come on a TTC board asking about this if you already had it in your head you were going to do it.

  • Hi tweedle. I remember you from the Sept board. I had an early m/c in November. My dr. recommended waiting 1 cycle and I did, got PG next cycle and m/c again. Now I am waiting for my levels to go down to zero and then for genetic testing.

    GL to you!

  • I waited a couple of months so not only was my body ready but also emotionally ready to start again.  Definately listen to your doctor about waiting one cycle.

Because of the great "Snow"vember of 2015, my medicated cycle was cancelled.  However, we were blessed with our little rainbow baby due on 8/14/15!  Baby J had other plans and decided to make his grand ole entrance on 7/4/2015!

Surprise!  Our little girl entered this world on 12/8/2016 after her eviction notice was long past due.  Our little turkey baby turned into a snow baby!

  • We did not wait.  That is not a popular answer on this board from my limited experience.

I discussed it at length with my doctor and he agreed that the conventional wisdom of waiting was more for the OBs convenience than anything else.

In any case while we did not wait, we didn't try real hard either.  My first post -m/c AF showed up on Monday.  So we didn't wait and we also didn't get pregnant.

Obviously listen to your doctor, but don't be afraid to ask more questions and make sure you really understand the reasons for waiting.

Bc there are lots of things I want to do, but that doesn't mean they are the right ones.  And as everyone has pointed out, my plan needed to be reevaluated.

  • Like everyone has said-listen to your doctor.  Also, the reasoning that your doctor gives you makes sense.  I know when I get a BFP I am going to get betas drawn ect, to make sure it is progressing like it should, and I wouldn't want any residual HCG to complicate things or wonder if it even is a new pregnancy.

  • Like pretty much every said it is definitely a good idea to listen to your doctor.  They know best.

GL with your HCG going down!!

  • I would actually listen to your doctor on this one.  My old doctor let me "try again" right after I had a methotrexate shot & surgery for an ectopic pregnancy after my HPT was negative.  Needless to say that was a big mistake & that doctor ended up thinking I had another nonviable pregnancy. Needless to say I got another opinion and it was HCG going back up from the old pregnancy (very long story). My advice would be to wait.

  • I waited 1 cycle after my first loss and got PG that cycle (but later lost that one too).  I just started my first cycle after my second loss and have been given the all clear to start TTC again.  I agree with previous posters - listen to your doc.  Good luck!
