Tiffany - a question for you!

You mentioned the yoga ball in a post - I've been thinking about getting one and really think I'm going to - at this point I'm about ready to try anything.

How do you recommend using it to best help?

  • ::butting in::

    I'm obviously not Tiffany, but I've got an exercise ball and it feels so great!

    I knew I could use it near the end to help the baby drop and to help with labor pains, but I started using it about two weeks ago and it has dramatically helped my hip pain.

    I just sit on it (make sure you're near a wall or something so you don't roll off!) and keep my knees wide apart.  Sometimes I rock around and stretch, sometimes I just sit with my pelvis "open" and other times I bounce a little bit.  I've found that I can stretch out my hips and sciatic area so much better and easier when I use the ball.  Sometimes at night when I get up to pee if my hips are aching, I'll sit on the ball for a few mins before getting back into bed.  It really helps, and almost immediately.

    During labor I've been told that you can sit on it or sort of kneel and lay over it, but I haven't tried other positions yet.  I'm curious how Tiffany is using it.

  • It's also really great for labor! You can sit on it and bounce a bit, or roll your hips around like you're either making a figure 8 with your hips like you're belly dancing, or just BIG round circles like you're using your vag to draw big 0's.

    I had one with my other daughter, and it was AMAZING. After she was born, I'd sit on it and gently bounce and it'd get her to sleep. I lent it to my pregnant neighbor and NEVER saw it again, and they moved away with it. :( I was too nice to ask for it back, but to be honest the way they lived... I kind of didn't know what germs I'd be inviting into my house... or what they did with it...

  • Butting in also--be sure to also check with your hospital.

    Although I have a yoga ball at home, I am not bringing it to the hospital because the hospital I'm delivering at has a stash of their own.

  • I so agree with the PP. Loved it now and used it during DD labor. Check with your hospital, they may already have some there. I know ours does, so I didn't bring mine.

    During labor I used it to sit on and roll my hips around, also provides counter pressure on your perineum. I also leaned on it while on my hands and knee's while DH massaged my low back and hips. I intend to use it again.

  • My hospital does have them and I plan to use it. I'm planning to go get one for home tonight, since I plan to labor as long as possible at home, and could use some relief anyway.

    I kind of want to bring it to sit on at work (I had a boss who did this) but I'm afraid it will be stolen. :(
