Hair twirling

Anyone have issues with this.  Maddy does it as a soothing technique.  She doesn't suck her thumb or take a paci,so I think this is her way to self soothe.  Last night she ended up with a 4 inch long "dread lock" for lack of a better word in her hair from twirling it.  It took me 30 minutes to get it all untangled and I had to cut a tiny bit of it out.  Anyone else deal with this and have any tips?  She does it more when she's tired.

Re: Hair twirling

  • I used to do that when I was younger and screamed my head off when my mother tried to comb it out.

Her solution was to cut all of my long hair off into a little pageboy.

Is it appropriate to use a little bit of conditioner in her hair?  That might help it not tangle so much.

  • I think alot of kids do something like that.  I have no advice, but it could be worse, mine pulls her eyelashes.

  • I still do this when I'm tired. I started when I was a baby doing it to my moms hair. DH hates it bc I will do it to his hair too and I don't even realize I'm doing it! Sorry, I'm no help. I tend to get more split ends than tangles though.

  • Nick totally does this, when he is tired, but also when he is eating.  When he was a baby, he played with his hair as he nursed or drank a bottle.  Now when he eats, he'll take a bite and then, often, run his fingers through his hair.  His hair is short, so he can't do any damage, for us it is just kind of endearing.
  • I don't have any children, this is my first, but does my husband count? Lol, he does this to my hair when he's sweepy, as we call it. Knowing my luck, LO and DH will be doing this together.

    same :(

She said I wasn't old enough for long hair.  I was able to grow it out later.

  • The thing is her hair isn't even that long now!  I think maybe we'll start doing pigtails during the day to avoid it at daycare and then just try to distract her with books and stuff at night.  I'm sure she'll outgrow it but spending so long last night getting a tangle out was frustrating for both of us for sure.

  • I still do this. Kaylee does it once in awhile and it's better than picking her lips until they bleed.

    This stuff helps knots.

  • She'll most likely grow out of it but like you said its a soothing technique so I probably would choose to let her do it.  Clark sucks his thumb when he is tired or teething but only at those times - he doesnt do it all day long.  Could always be worse.  Pig tails at DC sound like a happy compromise.
