Does your pedi have you fill out MCHAT?

My pedi office has us fill out a MCHAT form (Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers) before 18 mth & again at 2 yr visit. She passed with flyng colors. Does your pediatrician do this?

  • Our nurses started asking 10-12 questions screening for autism at our 9 month appt and I think they said they'll ask until 3 or 4 years of age.  I heard yesterday that the current incidence rate is 1 in 110 kids and most are diagnoses between 18 months and 3 years.  Scary.

It is scary. Right now I think I have a perfectly healthy little girl & that everything is ok. But you here alot of stories where things just suddenly change.

  • We did this at one visit. I'm thinking it was the 2 year appointment. DD#1 passed with no issue.

  • No, I hadn't heard of this. However, looking at the questions, my pediatrician has asked a few of these at appointments.
  • I'm an autism specialist...many pediatricians do this as routine in their practice. Screening for autism routinely at certain visits is recommended.
  • I believe we filled out this form at Ellie's 2 year appt but I don't think we did at her 2.5 year.

  • While Autism is scary it is still as a pp said 1 in 110 or a 0.009% chance.  If your LO interacts well with you, is starting and continuing to talk, hugs and kisses on you and/or tolerates you hugging and kissing on them, and overall behavior appears to be similar to other children their age, you are probably ok.  I am glad to hear that doctors are screening for it.

(not a autism specialist but have diagnosed it a time or two in my career)
