Doula?

My husband and I have recently decided to try and have a more natural birth than we had originally planned, and we think it might be helpful to have a doula there with us since we don't have much time to educate ourselves on different relaxation techniques, laboring positions, etc.  We watched the documentary "The Business of Being Born," and that, along with a few other factors has made us rethink what giving birth is all about and can be.

So my question is who all is using a doula and do you think it's too late at 36 weeks to hire one?  I have a list of possibilities and can get a consultation this week....

Re: Doula?

  • I'm going to use a doula and just started looking for one last week.  I've interviewed two so far, one who I love and one who wasn't so great.  There are two more I'm planning to meet because the one I love is very expensive so I want to make sure there isn't someone I like who'd be less.  Hopefully whoever I go with is also a post-partum doula in case I want help after we come home from the hospital.  I'm planning to make a decision by the end of the week.

  • I have one, and am so glad I do!  I know she took a last minute client because it was fairly predictable for her as far as timing with other clients.  You can also start practicing relaxation techniques from Bradley or Hypnobabies methods, or have a childbirth instructor give you a private lesson in this.  The doula will give you a postpartum visit too, so you're not too late in wanting one.
  • If you can find one who can take you it definetely isnt too late.  I am going to have one - Im trying to have a natural birth and my husband hasnt been able to go to my lamaze classes with me.  Everyone I know who has had a doula thought it was well worth the money to have someone dedicated to looking after you during labor and helping you to get the birth expereince you want.
  • Thanks guys!  Everything y'all have said has reassured me in our decision, and I really appreciate.  Wish us luck in our search this week!!!
  • I'm in week 37 and just hired a doula, despite me not being against medication. :)  I wanted to take advantage of their knowledge of relaxation techniques, and prenatal and postpartum advice.  It is definitely not too late - in fact, one of the doulas I interviewed said that she had a lady call her to request her services....on the way to the hospital in labor!  (And yes, she did go!)

  • I'm planning on going natural (although I'm also planning to be allowed to change my mind), and I don't have a doula or a midwife.  I know I will turn inside myself when I am in pain because that's how I deal with physical pain, so I don't know if an outside coach will be helpful for me.  I'd be interested to hear others opinions on why they are helpful and what they offer, though.
