Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If you've ever used Zoloft, please come in (NTR)

I'm probably going to delete not long after posting because I have family members who sometimes use the bump and I'd rather they didn't read this.

I've been dealing with really severe depression and anxiety for a few weeks and I saw my OB yesterday (previous to this pregnancy I've never experienced severe forms of either).  She's getting me set up with a therapist, but also prescribed Zoloft.  I took my first pill last night before bed, hoping that if I had any side effects I wouldn't notice them as badly because I'd be going to bed.  I woke after about twenty minutes feeling a little dizzy, nauseated, and I couldn't stop crying hysterically. I kept telling my husband I can't handle having two kids and we need to give our second up for adoption, etc.  This is not something I would normally ever, ever say, but I've also been having really awful anxiety attacks about having two children.

Part of the anxiety from that is because my husband wants to start his own company, so he works full time and then has early/late meetings and is gone sometimes on the weekend.  When he is home, he's always working.  By the time our little girl is born, he's hopefully going to be able to work from home for his own company, but it's been a rough transition to get used to having almost full charge of our toddler.

Anyway, I'm not sure if it was the medication or another awful anxiety attack.  My husband's been on anti-depressants and swears that when he was put on his first round of meds, he had similar panic attacks within the first few days, but I spoke to my mom today and she's doubtful that one dose would cause such a severe reaction (she's a nurse).  I'm not sure if I should try taking it again, and was curious what other people's reactions to it were.

I'm going to call the doctor's office as soon as it's open, but any input would be great.  Thanks in advance.

  • I was just prescribed Zoloft on Monday. I definitely had the dizziness and nausea. I was VERY tired after I took it. I had nothing like what you described. I also took it before bed and fell asleep. Last night I took it about an hour before I went to bed and the side effects were more pronounced because I was more awake to recognize them. I truly hope you're not having a reaction to the medication, but I would definitely check with your doctor. I hope everything works out for you! Good luck!

  • CAll you doctor.  Meds affect everyone differently.  I can't stress that enough.  THat said, it's not impossible to be affected that quickly.  And I'm sure your doctor told you it takes weeks to get the full benefit of anti-depressants.  You're not even at a theraputic dosage yet I'm sure.

  • It took a few days on Zoloft for me to feel calmer. I did not experience any bad side effects.

I think you probably just had a normal anxiety attack and you haven't been on Zoloft long enough to get the benefits.

But, like you said, I would call the dr to get their advice.

    I hope the Zoloft helps!

  • I am on Zoloft, and have been since my 2nd trimester.  Before that I was on other meds, and when I found out that I was pregnant I started weaning off of them because they were not really safe for pregnancy.  I had some weird emotional things going on for the first 2 weeks that I took the Zoloft, mostly extreme irritablility and anger.  I also experienced nausea, and lost my appetitite.  But I sort of attributed those feelings to withdrawls from my old medications too.  Anyway, after a couple of weeks I was starting to feel back to normal, and then I started to feel great.  The anxiety was gone, and the nausea was gone too.  It really helped me, and I have stayed on it since then.  You should give it a couple of weeks to really see if it will help you or not.  It might be rough, but just give it a chance!  I hope you feel better!
  • I had panic attacks and crying jags when my psychiatrist was trying to find the right dose for me. Once I got the right dose, they went away. I'm on 200mg a day right now, plus 5mg of Abilify, and Xanax as needed.

  • What is the strenght of the Rx?  If it was an OB, chances are, it might be too high to start out.  If you are going to a therapist, they may be able to start you out at 25 with some samples or a start up kit.  The first time I started Zoloft - I did this Rx and the transition was much easier.  I just started taking Zoloft again and started at 50 and it was a lot harder to adjust.  Sleeplessness, extreme dry mouth, a lot of yawning and zoning out.  Maybe wait and see the therapist before you try again?  They know more about dosage as that's their specialty.  You can always call your OB and see what they say too.  Every drug has a different affect on every person, Zoloft may just not be for you.  Good luck and I really hope that something helps!

eta - I just wanted to add, if you feel like you want to hurt yourself or anyone else - stop the drug immediately and call your doctor.  I cannot stress this enough!!  Some drugs have this affect - I actaully got like that years ago on Celexa and it was scary!

  • Thanks for all the kind responses.

She started me at 50 because she said it was a relatively low dose. Maybe it's too high after all, or maybe it was an anxiety attack without being related to the meds.

She made sure I have her pager and I promised her I'd page her or call my husband if I felt that way-he became EXTREMELY suicidal after one of the first drugs they tried for him and it was scary.
