Transverse Baby

LO had been head down for a while, and at my last appt the OB said she thought he was in good position, but then she went to do the internal (my first) and she couldn't feel his head, so she's not sure if he's still in good position.  Based on where I feel him moving and the shape of my stomach, I think he's transverse with his head on my left.  Are there any good stretches/exercises/methods for encouraging him to turn head down?  (I'll ask the OB at my next appt on Thursday, but I figured it can't hurt to get more ideas here.)

Re: Transverse Baby

  • Google it and you may be able to find some exercises. I am not sure if the stretches are the same for a completely breech baby or not but my OB told me to get on the floor, all 4's, and imitate a cat stretching. I don't remember what else she told me but if you google it you can find some of them.

  • Go to spinningbabies.com for exercises in getting baby to flip head-down.  I hope he was recently breech and is on his way back down to head-down but currently in transverse...that's what happened to me last week.  There are all kinds of other methods people try.  I was seriously considering accupressure before going to the hospital for a version (the version is what I actually had all my faith put into but it's unpleasant I hear), but the spinningbabies positioning worked and he's down now.

  • I read that doing the bridge position could help baby flip.  Lay on your back, bridge up with butt off the floor, so you are actually declined.

  • Hey steph :) I wish your ob-gyn had been able to do a quick ultrasound to check on the position. At your next appointment, you should definitely request this because of course position matters when it comes to the actual delivery! And if she doesn't have the facilities, she should be able to use her hands on your stomach and pelvis and feel for the different body parts to figure out your baby's position.

If your baby's head was down before, I doubt that he has flipped so late in the game. What you think is your baby's head on your side might be the butt/spine pushing out, while the feet stretch out in the opposite direction. This is what's been happening to me for weeks now. Of course, doing all the stretches that the other ladies are suggesting won't be a bad idea either. :)

    Good luck!

  • No advice, but I feel your pain. My LO's favorite position during this pregnancy has been to lay transverse. Her head has been down for a few weeks now that she's gotten larger, but the other night I was laying on the couch and I could feel her trying to jam herself back into a sideways position. It HURT! I felt her in this weird diagonal position for a few hours until she just gave up and put her head back down Smile

I have this serious fear of her wedging herself transverse though, and having to have a c-section!!
