Cloth Diapering

Need stripping advice. Help me identify problem.

I seem to  be having ammonia issues with ammonia again, moreso with the dipes I use for overnights rather than the others, but they are getting stinky too.

Most of them are BG that I got from a friend pre-owned, but not used very long. The ones I got brand new are not having problems really yet. I stripped them when I first got them with Dawn and hot water, and it worked well for a little bit, but not for long.

I have hard water. I use RNG Hard Rock, 2 Tbs. I cold soak, warm wash (half my diapers require warm, so I do everything on warm), cold rinse.

What could be causing the ammonia smell to appear again so often? Should I change my washing routine? What would be the most effective stripping method?

  • Do a soak with the rockin green. I boiled water in a 5 gallon pot added about a tbsp of rockin green. I threw in all of my microfiber inserts and let them soak for about an hour. I haven't had stink issues since. And if I were you, I would start washing your dipes with hot water to ensure they are getting clean. I wash all of my pul covers, pockets and fitteds on hot and have never had an issue.

  • I try to throw in 1 cup of vinegar with the cds every two weeks or when I notice the funk smell returning.  I thought I was going to have to strip with dawn last night, but I had to wash the diaps first so I thought, "what the heck,  I'll add some vinegar.  If it works great, if not, no biggie." When I pulled out the cds, they smelled marvelous.  I had ran out of vinegar and hadn't picked any up for almost two months so that may explain why the funk smell appeared in the first place.

I definately second to wash with hot water, plus make sure your are using enough water for how many diapers you're washing. GL.

  • I would wash in hot. I was washing in hot but decided that my hot was really hot and so I tried a warm wash for awhile. My diapers got a little stinky! I did a soak in RG last night and they are rinsing now. Hopefully my stinkies are gone!

  • You probably have some sort of build-up.  I would take your clean diapers and do a hot wash with just vinegar and then do a couple more hot rinses to really flush everything out of the diapers

  • I would switch to hot wash also.

I would also check to make sure you are using the right amount of detergent for your washer...top or front load?

  • top load. Hot soak or cold soak? The RnG package says to use 1-2 Tbs per load.
