Those who swaddled - come in!

If you kiddo was swaddled all night to sleep - when did you stop swaddling?

DS sleeps 10-12 hours a night, but only if he is tightly swaddled in the Halo sleepslack swaddle.  He's way too big for a blanket, he busts right out of them.  Two nights in a row this week he's broken out of his swaddle at 3am and wakes himself up.  I can't for the life of me figure out how he gets his hands out - that thing is like a straight jacket!  He's been fine the last 2 nights, but I'm wondering how long that will last.

I would try to stop swaddling him, but he will not sleep for more than 30 minutes if his arms aren't swaddled.  I put him in his crib unswaddled for naps and he never sleeps longer than that.

Re: Those who swaddled - come in!

  • Try swaddling just one arm, let him have some freedom.  DD#1 was never swaddled, but number 2 loved it.  She started breaking out when she was trying to roll over at 3 months.  Perhaps he's ready for a bit more freedom.  It will be rough for a few nights, but if you take it one arm at a time, then lose the body swaddle he should be good to go after a few days.  Good luck!

  • How old is he?

We swaddled until about 6 months using a Woombie

They have several sizes now when ds was baby they only had 1 or 2 sizes and he outgrew them at 6 months which is why we had to stop swaddling.

  • We used the Halo with Evan and around 3 1/2 months we started to have the same problem with him waking up. Well, we weren't lucky enough to have ababy that slept that long to start with, but he was sleeping for 8 hours and when he started to break free he would only sleep for a few hours at a time -  if that.

One night we just couldn't take it anymore so we called the doctor's office the next morning and they said to just stop swadding cold turkey. We did and he slept better. Not through the night, but better. The next week he learned to roll over and he has been a tummy sleeper ever since. That is when he started sleeping 10+ hours a night.

Depending on your LO's age he may be ready to start rolling over. If that is the case, you don't want him swaddled anymore.

Oh, and Evan practices all of his new skills in his crib before he shows them to us during the day. We had no idea he was ready to roll over. Same thing with standing. He did it in his crib first. Good thing we have a video monitor. We wouldn't have known otherwise.

Good luck! I hope your little guy is sleeping through the night again very soon.

  • About 3 months when she was trying to roll over. She had been getting her arm free for a few nights anyway when we used anything but the woombie so we just gave up and went to the sleep sack. She slept more soundly after that too - less grunting trying to get free.

  • He was 3 months on the 11th - so it sounds like it's about the time for him to stop!  I've tried the woombie with him to give him a little more freedom to stretch, but he gets his hands up at the neck and pulls it over his mouth and I'm afraid he's going to suffocate himself with it.

I'm going to try just swaddling one arm tonight and see how he does gradaully since he seems to not be able to sleep without it!

Thanks for all of the advice!

  • i agree with all of the advice so far.   we tried different swaddles with dd and finally just stopped cold turkey and she slept so much better.  it was as if she was saying 'finally, you fools! this is way better'   haha   we use sleep sacks and footie pjs now.
