Anatomy Scan instructions

Since a lot of you have had your anatomy scan done, did your dr. make you drink a ton of water before hand?  Mine told me that there were no special instructions for this scan.

I've also heard that you should eat or drink something to get baby moving, is that true or only if you were trying to find out the sex?  TIA!

Re: Anatomy Scan instructions

  • I just had my scan yesterday.

My doctor had me drink 16 oz. of water an hour before my scan because they can get better pictures when your bladder is full. I also had about 16 oz of orange juice an hour and a half before I went to get some sugar in me. Just the combination of water and juice made my LO move around perfectly for the tech to get measurements. He wasn't super slow and he wasn't super excited either. My tech said I did just the right thing.

It's completely up to what you want to do, though. I just did exactly what the doctor told me to and added in some sugar. Not too much though.

    Good luck!

  • My Dr. told me the same thing and I was pretty surprised.  I would have thought they would have said to do something.  Of course I will be going to lunch 2 hours prior and will be sure to have water, not to much I can't stand doing the 30 minutes scan but enough to help out.

  • I wasn't given any special instructiong before my scan and it all went well.

I've had friends that would drink a small glass of soda or eat chocolate before ultrasounds so they would get more views of the baby, but I don't know if there is any real truth to it or if it really matters.  I didn't do anything "special" and we saw LO just fine.

  • My doctor gave me no special instructions.  However, I'm supposed to "just know" that whenever I have an appointment, I'll be asked to PIAC.  When I have an ultrasound, I don't PIAC until after the ultrasound.

  • Our scan was at 8 am I had a regular breakfast with juice then drank like 3/4 of a bottle of water on the way there. There really weren't any "instructions" for our scan.
  • Nope. No special instructions.

  • I forgot....I've also had to PIAC before every appt and for all 3 of my ultrasounds so far it hasn't made a difference that my bladder was empty.

  • My instructions are to drink 16 oz of water before the appt.  My sister is a sonographer and says to drink more like 32 oz, otherwise they can't get a certain measurement of the cervix.

  • My appointment is at 4 on Monday and I can't go to the bathroom after 2:30 and I have to drink 32 oz of water between 2:30 and 4:00. How in the world am I not going to go to the bathroom?!?! Oh well I guess they will just get a really big PIAC sample after the ultrasound.
  • I was told to drink 32 oz of water an hour before.  After the clusterfvck appointment two weeks ago where I had to do the same I will NOT be drinking that much again.  I'm going to stop going to the bathroom about 3 hours before hand and just drink my normal amount.  I was in PAIN after drinking 32 oz of water.

  • I had to drink 24oz of water at least an hour before.  However, they made me pee immediately before the scan because they forgot they had to check my cervix (due to laser surgery in 2002 on cervix) to make sure it was long.

  • I was told to drink 40 (!!!) ounces one hour before the u/s.  I have hyperemesis and decided it wasn't worth making myself sick over, so I drank 6.  Nowhere close to what was asked of me, but the tech said it was totally fine, and she got everything from the scan she needed to see.
