Bad 36 wk appt

I went in for what I'd assume would be a simple and basic appointment.  I was told I have protein and sugar in my urine.  The OB had several theories of what it could be, but no answers will be given for atleast two days.  She mentions pre-e (but bp has been great), bladder infection, GD.  She opted for no internal exam because she was focusing on the urine issue and my fall on Sunday.  And she actually refered to my ongoing contractions (10 mins apart max) for over a month as BH.  I wanted to punch her.  My DH thinks that they label anything unexplainable/unknown as BH. (Thank goodness he knows how to make me laugh cause I needed it.)  Oh did I mention I had a melting down toddler in the room with me while my OB was 30 mins late and during the exam (45 mins in total)?  Anyone else's OB/MW opt to not do an internal at 36 wks?

UPDATE: They sent my "sample" into the labs and it came back negative for a bladder infection.  The office didn't say anything about me coming in to redo the test or if they were going to have it tested for anything else.  Hmmm...Could this be my OBs inexperience showing?

Re: Bad 36 wk appt

  • I had both protein and sugar in my urine at my 36 week appointment (Friday). I mean, my sugar was off the charts. They checked my blood sugar levels with a finger prick and they were normal so they told me to come back on Monday for a re-check. At that time, my urine was completely normal.

They think it was just something I had eaten prior to my appointment combined with my not having had much to drink yet that day that caused it.

I didn't have an internal at my appointment Friday because of their concern about my urine results. They did opt to do one in conjunction with my strep B test Monday.

  • That's reassuring that it can turn out okay.  I am still curious why she thought it might be a bladder infection?  I couldn't pee much since I had to go right before I left the house and hadn't drank a ton yet this morning, but she kept asking if I was going more.  My answer: Duh! Huge baby descending on my bladder, but no more than I would expect at this point in my pregnancy.  Guess I will try to be patient and expect some sort of follow up to this experience.

  • I'm surprised they didn't have you schedule to come back in in a day or two to recheck it. They had me schedule that and then had me schedule my weekly appointments on Monday when I came back in.

All of my urine results had been normal up until that point. I have had no BP issues and no swelling so pre-e was not a big concern. GD test was fine, although there is a family history of diabetes. They still made me come back in as soon as I could to re-check.

I made sure that I drank a ton before I went in Monday and watched my sugary food intake.

  • I didn't get one either. I didn't see my normal OB though I saw the NP. My next 2 appointments are with her as well. When I asked her when she would start doing internals she said she won't unless I ask her to do so. She feels that unless there is a reason for her to be in there she doesn't need to be in there and won't. I was surprised by this because even though it's been 4 years since I had DS#3 I'm pretty sure that most OBs do internals every week starting at 36 weeks. Am I correct?? So, unless I feel the need for one I will not know until my final appointment; which is with my normal OB; if I am progressing in any way.

  • I went for my 37 week apt today expecting an internal and didnt get one. He told me they will start to check around 38 weeks to check my cervix.
